Retires After Forty Years with Godown Company

After over forty years service with the Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, Ltd., Mr. Shiek Rumjaha Ismail, a pro- minent member of the local Indian community, said good-bye to the staff yesterday when he severed his connection with the Company on a well-earned retirement.

MR. TSE TSAN TAI'S FORESTRY AND FARM EXPERIMENTS

(BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT)

Quite a lot has been said in these columns in regard to the rapid growth of Kowloon. I will take & step in the opposite direction this time and pick out some of the old landmarks that seem to have faded from the face of the earth.

Mr. Ismail joined the Company in 1801, and when interviewed by our representative yesterday said that he had seen many changes along the foreshore in Kowloon. In fact one of his colleagues described Mr. Ismail as having grown-up with the The younger generation and those Godown Company, and although residents in the Colony who have Mr. Ismail was getting on in not been here long, will not remem years," our informant said that beber very well Mr. Tse Tsan Tai's was sure that Mr. Ismail parted Sceton Estate. doubt very much whether they have actually been to the placa.

When he first joined the Godowns, Mr. Ismail said the Company only boasted one wharf and the build ings were nowhere near what they were now. He added that the place, has grown very much, but he refus- ed to speak of the long innings he had in the fo-chong,

Mr. Ismail was very well-liked by hia seniors and subordinates alike. His unfailing courtesy won for him a very large circle of friends, and as a reminder of the many happy days he spent in the Godowns, his colleagues presented him with beautiful redio set.

I remember very well a visit paid to the place years ago, and although I was a comparative youngster then, I remember it very vividly for that was the first time that I plucked up enough courage to take a dive' off the side of the launch in a bathing picnic!"

This estate I am referring to is situated somewhere in Tsun Wan, and although one can get out there by car now, the only way one could get out to it formerly was by launch. The place is next door to the Texas Oil Company tanks (or I should perhaps have said instal lation), and although there is now nothing to be seen there, a visit to it should still prove very inter- esting.

An Experimental Farm,

A Memorial Hall. Some years after he acquired the estate, Mr. Tee was so pleased with the results of his early labours that he put up a small summer bungalow there and this was first used as his week-end residence but with the development of the place, it grew into a semi-permanent residence during the hot months when the sea breezes at Sector proved healthy and invigorating.

While the place was essentially: used as a form, Mr. Tse did not lose track of the "beauty" side of it, and by his careful and judicious handling, it soon developed into a very pretty seashore estate. There Was a tomis court and large grounds, and the beach just in front of the bungalow made swimming in the hot weather extremely plea-

Some little time after the bunga law was completed, Mr. Tse decid. ed to improve on it" and the result was that it was converted. into the Kwong Han Lau, a memo- rial hall dedicated to the memory of his friend and colleague, Mr. Yeung Ku Wan, who was one of the early revolutionaries."

A Planic Spot,

While he spent so much of bis time and money in development of this farm, Mr. Tse did not shut the public out from it. On the other hand, it was often thrown open to the local school children who made it one of their favourite picnic spots, and it was no unusual thing for Mr. Tse to receive two or three requests in the course of a week for permission for such-and-such a school to hold "a pienic party at your delightful Seeton Estate."

I do not quite recollect the exact date when Mr. Tac acquired the place, but I remember it was dur ing the governorship of Sir Matthew Nathan. Incidentally, Sir Cecil Clementi (then Mr. Clementi) was NANKING, June 17.
