Whatever activity there was in the market was centred in the Hungino Road and Columbia Cir- rle districts, where Prices have shown a very firm tendency. Prices in the Settlement and French Con- cession were on the whole steady, have und these districts would shown a much greater turnover but for the fact that many buyers were looking for bargains which did not materialize.

The money market remains very easy with an ever ready supply of funds for mortgage loana There is reason to believe that a good deal of this money will be employed for investment purposes as soon as the political situation, becomes less obscure,.

A large part of the increase in foreign population is due to the in- flux of Japanese. While it may be assumed that some of them occupy Chinese houses, the proportion is not great, as we find when compar- ing the data. In 1905, 2.1% of Chi nese-style premises were occupied by foreigners, and by 1930 this had increased only to 4.3%. At present it has dropped to 3.7%.

Aala Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New

York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. There is little change today and a further period of irregularity, with no more than stabilisation around the present levels, is at present indicated. Buying power seems content to hold to order limits at, or under, the market. Wheat: There was a sharp break after the news of the Process Tax, which reduces the acreage, starting from 1984, by 20 per cent, if necessary. The market rallied later on bullish North West crop news and the technical posi- tion is considered to have improved. Cotton: A definite decision on the process tax has been postponed until next week. On the probability that it will be around four cente, there was fairly heavy professional selling. Silver: This market has been under pressure from professional operators and Trade selling. Commission houses absorbed the offerings. Business Done: 1,570,000 shares,
