SILK OUTLOCK AT WUSIH
DEPRESSING STATE OF AFFAIRS REPORTED
Wasib, Ku., May 24 One serious problem which bas developed in Wurib as well as in other parts of the country is the decline in rural conditions. The serious fall in the price of agri- cultural products has greatly dimi nished the income of the farmers. They have been able to get only a bare living, and in some cases they have sunk further into debt. Seri. culture provides another chief souros of their income. But, with the falling off in world demand for silk, the raw silk industry in Wusih has declined in serious pro-i portions. While at the zenith of its prosperity, there were about fifty silk filatures in Wusih with an annual production of more than $3,000,000 worth of raw silk. But on account of the world wide financial difficulty and the compe- tition from Japan, the price of Chinese raw silk fallen a great deal, and the silk flaturos suffer ed great losses. Out of forty seven silk filatures in Wusih only nine remained open last year. The fall in the price of raw silk brought with it the fall in the price of fresh cocoons. This fur- ther decreased the income of the peasants and has resulted in fur ther deterioration of the rural dis- tricts.
Things a Little Botter this Year.
