GRAYEBLOCK'S SUCCESSFUL ORDEAL
Quite crowd of people interested in the building trade gathered in the Nanu Shi Wan district yesterday when the Con crete Products, Ltd., carried out an experiment which proved". both interesting and instructive. The object of the test, primarily, was to prove that a six inch. Graycblock is as fireproof as a nine inch, solid brick wall,
LOADING THE STRUCTURES
The nows received in Hong Kong yesterday that the trustees" of the Boxer Indemnity Fund have decid ed to make China a loan of five million pounds to enable the con. tinuation of the railway line from Canton to Hankow sounds almost too good to be true. For years merchants and others with capital invested in China have dreamed of the day when this might come to pass, but few thought that the pro.. ject Was more than a Utopian ideal. Now that it has been' guaranteed by the Fund, however, nothing short of a vast civil war should prevent the railway from being, completed and there is no reason to anticipate such a catas- trophe. Anyone familiar with the industrial and mineral importance of Hankow, which has been des- cribed as the Black County of China, will realise the immense im-' portance of this railway to British interests, particularly those in this Colony At present there are no inland communications between Hankow and Canton, apart from native roads and ferries, and ships trading with the great port are obliged to go all the way to Shang- hai and thence down the Yangtsze. The construction of the proposed railway will not only facilitate transport but will also mean a tremendous saving in time and money. In addition the line will open inland cities in the southern provinces which at present, owing to the lack of modern communica- tions, nic practically closed
Foreign manu- foreign commerce. facturers, through their agents in Hong Kong, will be able to exploit now fields and thus reach thou- sands of potential consumers whom have hitherto been difficult or even impossible to meet. It is probable that the Kowloon-Canton Railway will run special express trains to Hankow, stopping at Canton, Changsha and the principal cities en route; and it is estimated that the journey will occupy at least two days. This will necessitate, the pro- vision of hotel; accommodation for travellers and it is considered like. ly that Heng Chau, Changsha and other large cities will be chosen for the purpose," Already well over two hundred miles of railway have been completed from the Canton end, whilst another, hundred ·have. been laid from Hankow, so that the remaining two hundred miles of line or sp should not take very much longer to complete now that the project has been tally capitalis- ed. It requires little imagination to realise the tremendous benefit to trade which will result from the completion of the Canton-Hankow line, and it would be difficult to estimate the resulting increase to the trade of this Colony.. There is no doubt that the railway will offer considerable competition to ship- ping interests and for that reason it may be expected that some form of reciprocal agreement will be. entered into hetween the shipping. firms concerned and the railway, Yet, important as the economic effect on this Colony will be, the greatest advantages accruing from the new line will be reaped by China, for it will open up a wast and immensely wealthy region which hitherto has been touched only on huge industrial centre requires to exploit entirely new markets the surface. Next to Szechuan large quantities of machinery and with a total population of many raw materials, which in future may millions, The completion of this Province, the Yaugisze Valley is one of the richest areas. in the be transported from Hong Kong line will spell for Hong Kong an country, with huge mineral, and direct via the overland route. The efa of unprecedented, prosperity agricultural resources and a density line will also put Hong Kong in and we imagine that local firms as of population to be found nowhere touch with the coal and mineral well as manufacturers at Home will else if China. Hankow being a centres adjoining the Yangtaze Val greet the news of the Loan with Wantinued as font, of next Columa) ley and will enable focal merchants the greatest enthusiasm,
During the course of this test it was proved that the Graye- block solid corner block construction is capable of carrying the same londs as ordinary brickwork. The corner black type of con 'struction embodies the use of solid concrete blocks that are the full thickness of the wall only at load hearing points, and are built into the wall according to the distribution of the load. The hollow blocks between the solid corner blocks net as a panel wall. only, and are usually two thirds the projected thickness of the wall.
During the bourse of the test, observations were made of the action of the fire on the blocks and bricks and definite data as to their reaction obtained if possible.
The test carried out was as follows:-
Two structures, each 5'x5'x8' high were erected on piles. These structures were loaded up to carry a safe load of ten tons per square foot of brickwork. The weights were then re moved, the structures filled with petro! soaked hardwood which were set on fire, and allowed to burn for three or four hours. The Fire Brigade then played a hose against the hot material, and observations were made as to the effect of the fire on both the brick and the Grayeblock. as well as the effect of the water on the hot material. The experiment proved very successful.
Pyrometers and thermometers were used to record the tem- perature of the interior and exterior facea of the walls and com- parisons made regarding the insulative value of both materials.
Finally, the structures were loaded to "destruction if possible and observations made as to the netion of the blocks and bricks and the mortar joints under these strenuous conditions.
FINAL STAGE OF THE TEST-
It will be of interest to note that Grayebloska are now used extensively all over the Colony for building purposes, their value being well-known to all consumers of such materials.
