War Debts and acreage pros

WHEAT: Prices are just about unchanged on the weak.

The chief feature has been the tense situation in the Far East, Although fighting round Jehol has only assumed a skirmishing nature so far, there is every probability that war between China and Japan will be declared. Asia Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. Industrial isques are acting better than rails and it is possible that some industrial saxes will show a further rise. Growing interest is being shown in commodity stocks, of which sugar issues were a leading example. In the wheat market profit-taking caused a reaction but prices rallied at the close. The cotton market has ruled quiet but steady. Silver. prices advanced early in the day on trading, but eased toward the close. Business-Done-720,000-shares-

muents, thus eliminating America an a competitor in the world market,

Canada has still an enormous surplus, but with UEA, competi. tion tactically out of the market, the outlook in Canada is decidedly better. The demand from Enro pean countries, although still rather poor, is showing certain signs of reviving and it is confidently thought that Russia will buy sub- stantial quantities of Canadian wheat for seeding, purposes when Davigation is re-opened.

,

The reports to hand from Russia are not very favourable. Prepara tions for the Spring seedings have been backward and very sevara weather is continuing.

The article, in our opinion, is in mom healthy position than pre- tically any other commodity. We- think that it is a purchase on its own merits, but if any favourable developments occur regarding war debt negotiations, etc., this of course will make the position all the more healthy. We particularly favour the Chicago market because of the very poor U.S.A. Winter crop. We feel that the Winter and Spring crops combined will not amount to much more than what is required for domestic consumption in U:8.A.

SUGAR

too

The sugar market continues steady, but with business of s great volume. Present prices ap pear to be stabilised, and any buy- ing interest, either from the trade ar from outside operatore, is what the market requires at the moment, The New Yotk market is probably oversold, and operators there may become nervous if the Porto Rico and Philippine offerings were to suddenly ceasH. . Stocks held by American refiners ara доре large, and buying from that quar- ter is not a remote contingency.

Attention is now being contred on the grinding of the Cuban crop, the production of which is estimat- ed at two million tons, but it is doubtful in some quarters whether this figure will be reached. It is Iumoured that the Java crop for 1934 will not reach more than 300,000 tons. The trend of prices during the next twelve months will depend to a great extent as to how Cuban and Java sugara will come on the market, but it appears at the moment that offerings will not be unduly pressed.

We recommend as a straddle, purchases of September New York upninet sales of August London.

London's opening this morning -Mch. 5/6fd., May 5/0jd., Aug. 6/old.
