THE EXCHANGE MARKET

MESSRS. ROZA

REPORT

Messrs. Roza Bros,, have for- warded in the following exchange market report for yesterday.

FINANCIAL NOTES FROM LONDON

PORTLAND CEMENT DOES WELL: SIR RICHARD

COOPER ON WORLD CO-OPERATION :

ROOSEVELT AND THE U.S. BANKS CHRISTY. BROTHERS' NEW ISSUE

(Special Air-Mail Service)·

SATISFACTORY ČEMENT

RESULTS

London, March 14.-In view of the slackening of activity in the building and allied trades the pre liminary results for 1032 of Asso ciated Portland Cement Manufac turers and its subsidiary, British Portland Cement Manufacturers, are quite satisfactory. These com panies, of which Mr. P. M. Ste wart is chairman, have a combined share and debenture capital of over £15,500,000, and together pro- duce about 70 p.o. of the home out put of cement.

The British Portland Co., after maintaining the transfers to de- preciation reserves at £235,000, is again paying 16 p.e. for the year on the Ordinary capital, but the carry-forward is £8,497 lower at 2200,522. As the forward balance was raised slightly a year ago a small shrinkage in profit appears to be indicated.

The controlling company is pro viding £337,150 for depreciation- an increase of £25,000-but the di- vidend on the Ordinary capital is reduced from 8 p.c. to 7

P.c. It should, however, be noted that the 500,000 shares issued in 1931, on which only 4 p.c. was paid a year ago, now rank for the full divi- dend. Consequently the gross dis- bursement is only £18,000 less; and since the carry-forward is £3,301 higher the net earnings have ap- parently been well maintained.

CONCERTED ACTION FOR

WORLD PROBLEMS

of gold. This, reveals something more than fear of penalties for passing hoarding; it shows also a of panic. Important also is statement by the Chase National Bank, announcing the separation of that, bank from its affiliated company, the Chase Securities Cbr- poration. We recorded in this co- lumn yesterday a similar step by the National City Bank. These two decisions show recognition that Mr. Roosevelt's plans for reor ganisation will be carried out in earnest, and also suggest full sup port and backing for such plans from the hig New York banks.

There is now every reason to hope for two things. The quick return to normal functioning by the sound banks, and the restora tion of the dollar to the exchange markets under favourable condi- tions. Interest will now centre up- on the nature of the measures, which cannot be delayed, for re storing proper bank facilities in the

weakest areas.
