FOLK SONGS

TAUGHT TO WHISTLE BLUE-AS-THE-FORGET-

ME-NOT

Bullfinches trained to pipe folk songs have become popular pats in London and there is now a keen demand for them.

These birds come from the Con- tinent and many are sold at prices as high as ton guineas.

A West End bird-fancier told the "Evening Standard" that:

"These bull-finches are similar to

the British bird in colour and are slightly larger.

They come to us from the Black Forest, and are attractive with their black velvet cap, bright red breast and slate blue back.

The demand is greater than the supply, as the training of these birds requires skill and patience and BOUDAN" is a secret closely kept by the villa- gors in the Black Forest area.

"The birds reach this country at the end of each year and they are sent with & guarantee that they can pipe a Black Forest folk song

"The birds we receive can give one of two tunes-a variation of Polly Perkins' and Blues as the Forget-me-not.

י.

"As soon as the bull- finoh is batched it is handed over to the trainer, who takes it into his cottage in the Black For- est, tears it and whistles to it all day long.

The bird is kept in a quiet room and the trainer spends about eight months in sitting close to the bird the particular song he wishes it to and whistling over and over again

"Some of the best birds we have Blue as the Forget-Me-Not with received have been able to pipe out a single pause, but in spite of the eight months' training the ma jority of them hesitate occasionally at various parts of the tane.

"All of them, however, can pipa! sufficiently well for the tune to be recognised sasily.

"An important feature of the training is that the bird must hear the whistling of the tune short- ly after it is hatched. Even a bird which is only two months old can- not be trained to pipe.”......
