Ramble Over Kowloon
Peninsula Hills
(BY A RAMBLER)
A dull, chill day in March did not prevent us, four in all, from taking our planned outing in the New Territories.
We drove 8 miles along the Castle Peak Road, and then traversed a road, which took us up hill, passing pineapples, growing in patches on the hill sides. The valley on the loft was highly cultivated in terraces, with nursery garden pro duce there, was no vacant ground in that valley.
Eventually came in full view of the Shing Mum Valley, which was sone hundreds of feet below us. with Lend Mino Pass immediately in front. Tho Shing Mun River was flowing towards 119, now lazily finding its way among the rocks and stones that form its bed. It must be a fine sight when in spate we stood somewhere in the vicinity of where the dam will be made. The valley narrowa just here, and turns eastwards, into a magnificent gorge, and it is just above this that drilling on the opposite hillside has commenced.

Soon we came to some steps, cut in the hill side leading to a conduit from which we got a delightful bird's eye of the largo Kowloon réservoir.
Pushing on we reached a hill top, where the ufforestation department had at some time planted ir trees, but only a few have survived, and the empty saud squares alone re main. A steep incline took 118, after ton niinutes stiff climb, across the daun of the large reser voir.

All was very peaceful, white punt was against the bank in the big reservoir, and a man was fishing near by; we heard from the distance an Indian chanting his evening prayer.

Wo left our car here, and taking narrow track, which wound in and out of the hill side, we came to the old, stone paved, truck, which led to Smugglers' Pass. One wonders what, in the old days, was smuggled over it. There we passed many beautiful hillside flowers, unspoiled by the dust from motor traffic; one especially, with its shaded pink, bell shaped, wax like flowers, was very lovely. A local expert calls it Em Kianthus quinqué florun!
No Animal Life.
There was no bird or animal life visible but we collected 'n fine caterpillar with some of the leaves from the shrub on which we found him; then tied him up in a handker. chief; but while we rested for our frugal luncheon, he made good his escape, and we did not see another like him.
Dotted high on the slope, of the hill on the opposite side of the valley, were caves with oval shaped entrunees. We made surmises as to what they were: we suggested tigers dens, smugglers' caves, er fortifications; but we now know that they are disused wolfram mines.
Magnificent Panorama, From the summit of Smugglers Pass, our path was for a time an eney gradient downhill; then up an incline, at the summit of which, burat upon us a magnificent panora ma, of Tide Cové, Lion Rock, and all the lovely islands and hills in that direction. We made a detour to a hill top, which we found was
