CHANCES DISCUSSED

Although there are fifty-six races on the card, the Derby always ex- eitos the most interest, and weeks before the Race Meeting, everyone wants to know who will win the Derby, as though the rest of the race meeting does not count!

TENTATIVE SELEC. TIONS FOR SATURDAY

SOME LIKELY ONES TO

THINK OVER

FINAL SELECTIONS WILL APPEAR ON FEBRUARY 18.

The following are the first selce tions for the twelve rates on the programme for the first day. The final selections will be made after the final gallops,

Race 1. Swale, **

Race

To discuss the likely winners, it is necessary first of all to get some i idea of what is likely to start Going over the list alphabetically, the following are the probables :- Brechin (Mr. Clark), Charming! Star (Mr. Li), Coo Coo Bay (MF. | Race Hill), Jack(7), Mayflower (Mr. Ip), The Gotwit (Mr. Frost), Trent- į bridge Mr. Necda). The only Race other possible starter is Cossack's Beauty (Mr. Heard).

Ooo Coo Bay,

There has been a lot of talk about Coo Coo Bay walking away with

there will be any runaway victory for her, or for any other pony for Race

that matter. Jockeyship will be

very important factor in this year's Derby and Coo Coo Bay having the services of Mr. "Billy" Hill Race

·certainly appeals to the as a likely winter, but not as a super-pony 'in

any sense.

Trentbridge.

Race 11. Oharming Star,

Mrs. Pearce's Trentbridgo is n very good mover and I understand Race 12. Diana Bay. from a reliable source (not the owners), that the pony can do about 3.03 for the mile, and half. This is certainly a very excellent time and renders must ask them selves whether this time can win thej Derby. It has only been bet tered on one occasion, that is, by Tiberty Bay last year. Mr. Needa who will be riding' this pony has very good record in the North.

Readers are reminded that these

Inek has been reported from

several well-informed quarters as a very good thing for the Derby. It is not certain who will ride Jack but as the information comes from dependable sources, I pasa it on for what it is worth.

The others, I am afraid, will be among the also rans." Brechin looked very promising at one time, hat the pony is an uncertain quan- tity and unless Clark can get very inch more out of him than the riding boys appear to be able to do, he is not a danger to the ' favourites. "

Mayflower is the best pony in the Li and Li stable and although the pony is quite a good one in his chum, it is feared that he is run ning up against a very tough op. position. He will be lucky to get a place.

Mr. Soares, in the absence of Prima Donna, will have to fall back, if he intends to start, on Night Patrol, an obviously inferior pony compared with Prima Donna.

selections are not final but are only given to enable readers to think Final Selections will appear over the possibilities for Saturday, Saturday morning.

THRILLING FINISH CF

1923 DERBY

The most thrilling Derby ever witnessed in Hongkong was in 1993, when four ponies, finished in almost a straight line. A picture of this finsh appears on page 2.

Our racing scribe in those days, writing of the race says;~~~

THE AUSTRALIANS

WHAT TO WATCH DURING

md me to d

THE MEETING

MANY GOOD ONES THIS YEAR

Although there are comparative. ly few Australian ponies of this season, they are very much above the average and it looks as though the present lot will prove that even in Australian races the honours can be evenly distributed.

Rosy Morn and Golden Dawn' are very good pair from the ** Hau Un" table and they should ba able to earn their owners somo stake money, particularly Rosy Morn who seems to be a very powerful pony.

Night Star and Northern Star are not bad at al, but taken all in all, they do not appear to be as good as some of the others."

Portis.

Portin, one of the ponies which Alr. Frost has been patiently train ing is a very good candidate and already is looked upon in certain quarters as the likely winner of the Australian Derby. City of Bris- bane, although very backward in the earlier days of the training sea- son, is showing a good bit of speed now and might win a short race- though this is not likely in view of the opposition he is up against.

Ration, a dun of 14.2, is one of the hest and over a long distance he can be confidently expected to give Portia a very good rhcs.

Stickyleak was one of my earliest selections and there is no renkon, after watching his training, ta change my mind about this pony's capabilities. He is definitely good and can stay...

in Hong Kong.

Mr. Seth's What's That is quite a good one and looks very much. like Friar Tuck, only What's That appear to be a bit speedier. This pony will probably be ridden by Mr. Caplan.

t.

Mr. Wong Ping Shun's Sunuş looks very good. He enn shift very well and in the hands of Mr. Proulx, might prove a surprise to the favourites.

Mr. D. S. Li's mount in this class will probably be Mr. Leung Wu's Australian Chief. This is a very promising animal

The chief event of the day, of course, was the Derby in which a keen public interest was shown, Messrs. The Raincloud. is another good mover. He is a bit on the fine side but that is not against him, especi ally in the shorter races.

Dancing Jack is a very smart looking candidate and may account for an upset, if any upset la com- ing.

The local champion jockey, Mr. Frost, will have a large number of ponies to select from, but he will, in all probability take The Kiotwit out in this race, I do not know if The Gotwit can stay the distanco, but Mr. Frost can be thoroughly relied upon to make him run.

Cossnck's Beauty have done some very good gallops during the early moming tryouts, and if he starts at all, Mr. Heard will ride him, I think. If there is one pony that the rice.
