She did her utmost to colonise it but because of the climatic conditions and the low standard of living of the Chinese in Manchuria the Japanese could not compete and would not emigrate to that country. My personal be ief is that Japan wante Manchuria for its natural resources, especially its oil, because if Japan were to go to war with a first-class Power that is one commodity for which the would have to depend upon outside sources.
