GENERAL COHEN ON MANCHURIA
OIL RESOURCES. COVETED BY JAPAN
Generi Murice A. Cohen, who is at present in Europe in the intereste of trade and good re- lations between Europe, and China, paid another visit to his parents in Manchester after a journey to Paris and Geneva, and in a brief inter- view with a representative of the Manchester Guardian discussed the present situation in Manchuria.
Many people are under the im pression that Japan needs Man- churia for colonisation purposes. That is absolutely wrong. Japan has had the sphere of influence in Manchuria for a number of years. There was absolutely po restriction of emigration from Japan into Manchuria. She was dominant in that country. She did her utmost to colonise it but because of the climatic conditions and the low standard of living of the Chinese in Manchuria the Japanese could not compete and would not emigrate to that country. My personal be ief is that Japan wante Manchuria for its natural resources, especially its oil, because if Japan were to go to war with a first-class Power that is one commodity for which the would have to depend upon outside sources. I believe the militarists in Japan made up their minds to secure Manchuris for that sole par pose. And this, is the common be lief in China,
It has been said that Japan-has been talking about Manchuria for the Manchus Well, that is as big joke to people în China as it would Lbe tolin yahat the Amatiran fovern. ments should return the States 40 the Red Indians because there is just about the same proportion of Manchus in Manchuris as, there ar
