A District Officer's Day. A typical day in the life of District Officer gives an excellent idea of local government and its working in the New Territories He is, let us say, due to make an official visit to Tai O, the large village at the Southern end of Lan Tau Island. His launch loaves Hong Kong at 9 am, and going through Kap Shiu Mun Pass, keeps along the North coast of Lan Tâu until Tai O is reached after a journey of about two hours and a half. On disembarking, the party is met by the. Police Officer and taken to the charge room of the Police Station which during the visit is converted into a Police Court, where any and every case in the district is to be dealt with. The head Kai Fong is usually present, and is by virtue of his position asked to accept. a aest near the District Officer.

Nothing is too large or too small far the attention of the District Officer. Often it is suggested, Will he be good enough to make a personal visit?" He will and does so. The road or temple is certainly in need of repair and the Government will grant a sum to assist. The unruly husband is rebuked; boundaries of disputed, lots are measured and marked out; and the officer returns to the Police Station having socomplish ed a useful day's work.
