SHOCTING PARTYS CHINESE NEW YEAR
ADVENTURE.
What is thought to be the largest wild boar shot by local hunters was brought back to the Colony over the Chinese New Year holidays by a party of enthusiastic Chinese sportsmen after a very adventurous shooting trip into Chinese territory, The party left Hong Kong during the holidays aboard the motor launch Saarland, and followed the coast to Castle Peak where they rounded the Peninsula and steamed into Hau Hoi Wan or Deep Bay at the mouth of the Canton river. Landing, they carefully picked their way through the deep marshes, and entered the Shun Chun river in Chinoso terrilary.
The country about here is very barren and it was surprising to think that it was a place for search of game. However, here and there footprints of large animals, as big is the palm of the hand, were seen, and after four days of tracking they eame upon a thick shrubbery some few miles Inland. Here their dogs refused to move any further, and, barking furiously, gave signs of a honr being in the vicinity. Realis- ing this the sportsmen set twenty

beaters to work and surrounded the place.
A bunch of firecrackers and soverad loud bomb-crackers were thrown into the bush and the party stood guarding the openings. Sud- denly a young female boar shot out. of the shrubbery and was immedi ately shot by one of the party. Following almost directly on its heels was a large malo boar, A well aimed shot which entered the animal's heart brought it to the ground.
To weigh the animal it took four men standing on high boxes and supporting the boar on two thick bamboo poles. The small femals pig weighed 160 catties or about 200 lbs., while the large boar weighed 987 catties or over 380 lbs. It is thought that the large boar is the biggest of its kind shot by the local sportsmen.

In addition to the lag wild hoars the hunters also bagged four deer and many head of mall game. |; ,

THE INDUSTRIES OF KOWLOON
I. The Industrious
The editor. has asked me to write. about the industries of Kowloon, I wish he had asked me to describe the industrious, for that would be far easier.
Ikhow the industrious. I travel daily with them on the ferry. They are of all ages, classes, and races. We sit close together and try to keep warm, the Chineno foi in his cotton garments and his master in a padded cont; the typists in their. flimsy bub smart little boats," often hatiess but never untidy of head; the housewives going over to the island to shop, well powdered noses, half hidden behind coat collar or far; the business men, some of thein
ressively hearty about the cold, ron, Chinese, Japanese and Portu others cursing it; the school child- guese, chattering a polyget language in which they slip in one sentenc from Chinese to English and finish it in Portuguese. These are some of the industrious whose tasks take them daily to Hong Kong.
By the Canton Train,
But there are other ferry passen,
Bors. Tho shouting crowd of coolics who fight their way down to the lower deck with their burdens of foodstuffs for the Island; the seething maas, laden with bundles parcels and papier maché suitcases, which arrives each evening from Canton by train, crosses the har bour, and is apparently absorbed in the population of Hong Kong.
And what of the industrious who live and work in Kowloon? Who shall count them? Thousands of them are employed in factories the very existance of which is known only to certain Government officials among the British population. They load and unload the vessels arriv ing daily at the wharves. They are employed in the big shipbuilding yards, in the seinent Ectory, the rope works and the brick works. They are cutting down hills and shovelling them into swamps to make fresh land, they are laying down roads and for some mysteri oua purpose digging holes on them before the surface is dry. They are building a modern city on the mainland so quickly that to leava thres Kowloon and return in months, is to find new houses, new shops and whole new streets where before was a parcel of waste ground.
