FIVE MONTHS AT CURRENT EXPENDITURE

WISDOM OF EARLY RESTRICTION

Storage in the Island reservoirs on Decembar Int, according to the P.W.D. monthly return was 1,88 million gallons compared with 1,845 m.g. at the same time last year. The maximum storage is about 2,293 m.g.. Consumption of water was 279 m.g. compared with $53 m.g. in November, 1931, and 396 in August. The restric- tion to a 10 hours" supply was imposed on the 8th and remited in a useful caving of about 74 m.g.

On the Mainland storage on December 1st was 550 m.g. com pared with 683 m.g. at the same time last year. Consumption was 161 m.g. the same amount as in November, 1931,

The total storage in all reservoirs was on December 1st 2,383 m.g, and at the present rate of consumption we have sufficient to jast for five and a half months from that date. le., till the middle of April,

The widom of early restrictions is obvious and no doubt, fur ther saving will have to be effected. At the rate of expenditure pre- valent in August last there is just enough to last till the end of March 1

Vory probably not. But Mr. F. || C. Smith handled all of them with case when speaking at the autumn research meeting of the Institution of Gas Engineers in London, dat

Mr. Smith, who is on the stati of the London Gas Light and Cake Company was presenting a paper on The planning of gas installa- tions to conform with the British: standard specification for strect lighting. He flung strange diagrams at his audience, and they appeared to appreciate them.

The meaning of much of Mr. Smith's paper was hidden from the layman, but the results will be appreciated by every pedestrian and motorist. His paper was en indication of the constant research being made by the gas industry in order to improve the lighting of traffic-crowded streets.

TRAGEDY ON S.S. TEAN

QUARTERMASTER - DROWNED.

A brief report was made to the Harbour Office by Capt. 3. Pringle, | master of the China Navigation! steamer Tean to the effect that a quartermaster lost his life while. on a voyage from Amoy to Hong Kong.

The first intimation was when the words." man overboard" were beard. This was about 12.30 p.m on December 8 when the vessel was in Latitude 27 degrees. 23N. Longi- tude 121 degrees. 33E.

It was found that the Chinese quartermaster had fallen over- board. A life-buoy was thrown into the sea, and the vessel put about. A life boat was lowered, and a search was made, but though an hour was apent in looking for him, no trace was found." The Vossel then resumed her journey and the Captain made a report to the British Consul at Amoy.
