THE SHIPPING PROBLEM

RACE FOR A PLACE ON THE SEAS

WORLD'S EXCESSIVE

TONNAGE

Important statistics in regard to canad foreign shipping, British which are deserving of special con- sideration in view of the Inter- antional Shipping Conference to be held in Loudon in October, f are published in the "Shipping World,'

At the Conference - proposals are likely to be considered for the organised laying-up of tonnage by the principal maritime countries.

An analysis of Lloyd's Register | shows that, while the cargo-carry- ing capacity of the world's ship- ping (excluding liners, tankers, and coasters) has increased since 1914, by upwards of '19,000,000 tons deadweight, there has been a do. crease of 3,819,000 tons deadweight on the sanie basis in vessels flying the British flag.

It is pointed out that while the seaborne commerce of the world. is now less than it was in 1914, the cargo-carrying capacity of foreign ships has increased by 2,070,000

tons.

This race for a place on the seas, it is stated, is one of the maddest things done by a mad world. It is possible to believe,. however. that in the disentangle ment of the mess which has been created, British ship-owners have a great opportunity to regain their predominant position, if only they

I will set to nd put their house in

It is pointed out that the ton- unge of British general traders (vessels under 18 knots) has do-Diomed, British str., 6,354 tons, created by 2,959,000, while that of foreign vessels of the same class haa incressed by 11,230,000 tona

In the next class, that of cargo- liners (12 to 14 knots), British tonnage has remained almost ata tionary al about 4,000,000 tons gross, while foreign tonnage has more than doubled (2,031,000 to

| 5,188,000 tons gross),''

In the more limited category of intermediate liners (14 to 10) knots), there has been a large pro- portionata increase in each case, British gross tonnage baving risen From 030,000 ton 4,050,000, and foreign tonnage from 1.290.000 to 2,194,000. Even larger increases are shown in the case of tankers.

The tonnage of British liners has increased by 77 per cent. to 1,883,000. compared with the 12 per cent. increase of foreign owners.

In the case of constern alone, there has been a disproportionate increase of British tonnage. This, it is explained, is accounted for by the development of coastal traffic in the Dominion since the War par. ticularly in Canada and Australia. How Contracts Are Lost.

Siz Arthur Sutherland, speaking to the Newcastle Chamber of Com- morce on Aug. 25 said they must get the costs of ship repairing

dawn.

Recently the lowest tender from that district for a big contract was £23,000, he said. The contract went to Rotterdam for £16,000.
