The capital and running costs of this method are only slightly greater than in the case of tran- sporting the material to Whitfield. They are there to guard the Bank from any attempt which may be made by outsiders to get into St.

The origin of this guard may be traced back to the time of the Gordon Riots in 1780. These word, ricts led by a crazy member of Parliament named Lord George Gordon, who objected to the re moval of certain laws against the Catholics.

For a whole week London was in the hands of the mob, and dur ing this time many houses bolong- ing to the Catholics were burnt and the Bank of England was at- tacked.

To prevent a recurrence of this lattor the authorities determined that a military guard should always be sent to the Bank overy night to remain there until the next day.

Normally the guard is supplied by one of the Guards regiments stationed at Chelsea or Wellington' Barracks, but during the war the guard was supplied by the regi ment doing garrison, duty at the Tower of London.

During the night the Bank in for the time being turned into a military camp, and all comers have I to be challenged oven the Bank's lown servants.
