Now that America has

shell into the discussion that is going on at Lausanne, everybody the newspapers are giving leading is talking about " war debts.” Ali- articles on this question, and if you ask daddy he will tell you wherever he goes the same subject is being discussed.

What are these things called war debts? You cannot remember the Great War of 1914-1918, but you all know that war costs money. Soldiers and sailors must be cloth- ed and fed, gana, thips, and air- planes must be built, and then there is transport.

All this is extra expense over and above that which nations have in normal times, and so meet all these big war bills one nation has to borrow money from another to enable it, to pay

Most of the money England borrowed, came from America, but Great Britain lent lots of money to other nations. Now when money is borrowed the one who borrows must agree to pay “in- terest." Do you know that when you put your money into a bank you lend it to the banker, who pays you "interest "Well, that' is just the same thing that hap pened during the war: Americu lent Enigand money, but she charged Interest,

All this means that if you are not quick in paying back your, debt it will grow larger and larger every year," because the interest will be added to it.

Each country is now receiving money in repayment of loans in connection with Inland Lote toriana held at Hanoi in January, it has made, but as soon as Nos. 3000 and 3157 amount-1938, amounted to $393, Passages, it is received. out it has to go to. cd to 80,500 and the co Foto of the Hong Kong Toprezenta pay debts. Checno,

If you answer these ever,

UNCLE JACK:

Oh, you WILL be so clever.

They are there to guard the Bank from any attempt which may be made by outsiders to get into St.

The origin of this guard may be traced back to the time of the Gordon Riots in 1780. These word, ricts led by a crazy member of Parliament named Lord George Gordon, who objected to the re moval of certain laws against the Catholics.

For a whole week London was in the hands of the mob, and dur ing this time many houses bolong- ing to the Catholics were burnt and the Bank of England was at- tacked.

To prevent a recurrence of this lattor the authorities determined that a military guard should always be sent to the Bank overy night to remain there until the next day.

Normally the guard is supplied by one of the Guards regiments stationed at Chelsea or Wellington' Barracks, but during the war the guard was supplied by the regi ment doing garrison, duty at the Tower of London.

During the night the Bank in for the time being turned into a military camp, and all comers have I to be challenged oven the Bank's lown servants.
