THE TRAGEDY OF

POCHOW.

VICTIM OF LOOTING AND

FAMINE

Pochow, Anhui, Juné 23.-Doubt- -less ours has not been unlike the ex

perience of many other places where fumine prevailed, in that the chief subject and concern has been the famine and relief, during the winter and spring. But it is good that fine whent crop has now been gathered and the needy are relieved, at least for a while. But we are far from the end of the real suffering from the distressing famine. There is great fear af disense this summer and there will almost certainly be much suffering from hunger and cold next winter. And for trying to relieve that suf- fering there is already much con- cern felt.

Realizing the scope of territory flooded and at the game time the great difficulty of Inising funds for relief, it seemed all but an impos- sible task. This was the atmon-wrapped in 'Chinese newappers, ating quarters to make phere in which the Pochow people seemed to live during the fall and most of the winter. But in the laltor part of the winter it became known that two hundred tohs of wheat had been allotted to Pochow. However, even then, it was neces sary to reckon how much this would give to each of 400,000 needy.
