Tlie occasion on June 2-the Royal Aeronautical Society's garden party at Hanworth Club-provided more than one dramatic encounter. Buron von Schleich was walking in the crowd When he met Licut. Reece, now Liverpool business man whom ho recognised as the pilot ho had shot down over the Gerlin line. He went up to him, put his arm round his aboulder, and ahook him by the hand.

Before renching Hanworth the German had flown from Lympne to Heston, where half a dozen air. craft had gone up to meet them. Among those who welcomed them were Ft. Lts. Clarkson and Page and Capts. Cantrill, Taylor, and I. M. Harris.

Baron von Schleich immediately made inquiries about the identity of a British airipan with whom be fought over Raupaume on Septem ber 2, 1818. Describing what hadi : happened he said:

"I wha-attacked by an English nirman flying a Sopwith-Dolphin. On his machine was the distinguish. ing mark of a bird which looked

very much like a stork. We fought for some time and then my ammuni- tion gave out. Immediately my opponent saw what had happened he flew quite close to me and waved is hand as a signál that I could go. He would not fight in unarmed

enemy.

"That was a most sporting action which I shall never forget. I am most anxious to meet this British sportsman, shake him by the hand and give him my thanks.”.

The Master of Sempill, who re- coived the Germana, has promised

to try and trace the unknown air- man. 274
