The struggle for life of a woman Who hung screaming fifty feet up from a roof top in Brighton was watched by an excited crowd, who eventually saw the woman drop, but escape from death.

The scene WAS on Pavilion. parade, near the sea front.

When she was first seen she had nu umbrella in her hand. A police- mau yelled to her to keep still, and the fire brigade was summoned.

The policeman tried to get on the roof from a skylight, but could not lift the window.

A the firemen were raising an escape the woman gave a. last shrick and dropped. Other fire- men dashed forward with a jump ing shoot, but they wore too late.

The woman struck and damaged a balcony as she fell, and then re- bounded, Firemen crowded for ward and at the risk of severe in-

jury broke the woman's fall.

She was taken to hospital with a fractured thigh and severe shock.

She was Miss Emily Cassandra Metge, aged sixty-four, who was staying at a house nearby and must have crawled along the roof.

At the moment of the incident her disappearance was being re- ported to the police. -

The woman had rented the room at the boarding-house only the previous night, and had a consider- able number of Treasury notes in har possession. The Brighton police

was in the habit of carrying about £50 in notes with her.
