IMPORTS AND EXPORTS DOWN ON LAST YEAR.

EFFECT OF BOYCOTT ON JAPANESE TRADE.

According to the official returns compiled by the Statistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Department the trade of the Colony suffered a rolapse in the month of January, the total value of imports amounting to $54 millions (the lowest figuro since October, 1930), while exports totalled $38.3 millions (the lowest figure since the short month of February, 1931)..

As compared with January of last year imports declined by $4.8 millions, while exports fell #0.7 millions.

Part of the deelines in the trade of the Colony during January was due to the Chinese boycott of Japanese goods which con tinued with increasing intehaity, the total imports from Japan amounting to only $1.3 millions as compared with $5.2 millions in January, 1831; piece goods declining by $18 millions and food- ataffa by $3.1 millions.
