BAD OUTLOOK FOR FUTURE

London, Dec. 16.The deplorable state of the passenger and freight traffic between England and Aus tralia was stressed by Sir Alan Anderson, the Chairman of the Ori ent Steam Navigation Company, at the company's annual meeting to- day.

Sir Alan was by no means cp- timistic regarding the outlook "for the immediate future and painted gloomy picture for the share-hold' ars. Trade this year was bad he said, wut next year would be worse, and there was no knowing when it would recover.

At present loss than, a third of the berths for saloon passengers on the Orient boats are occupied by the time the vessels reach Australia, while for the return journeys only about seventeen per cent, of these berths are usually engaged. More- over, Government assisted emigra- tion from Great Britain to Aus tralia has fallen by 97 per cent, in three years owing to the fact that Australia does not need new settlers. This has been a serious blow to the shipping companies.

Freight earnings, declared Sir Alan, were now only a quarter ct the normal amount but all ship- ping: lines to Australia, he said, were trying to meet the difficulties by co-operation and economy rather than by increasing freight rates.
