THE COLONY'S TRADE.

OFFICIAL FIGURES FOR SIX MONTHS.

INCREASES IN BOTH IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.

The Statistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Depart ment reports that the declared value of merchandise imported into Hong Kong during the half-yearly period ended September 30, 1931, amounted to $362.4 millions, an increase of 74.3 million as com- pared with the corresponding period of 1930, and 71.8 millions more than the corresponding, six months of 1824.

Exports totalled #963,2 millions, representing an increase of $03:0 millions as compared with 1030, and an increase of $24.3

as compared with 1921

-No statistics available for periods July, 1925 to March, 1930. In reading the above figures it should be noted that in 1030-31 tho, sterling value of the Hong Kong dollar depreciated very considerable as compared with the previous recorded periode, but, at the same time the fact should not be lost sight of that during the 1030-31 periods sterling wholesale prices recorded a decline of some 25 to 30 per cent., thus offsetting to some extent the ap parent declines in sterling values
