Owing to the great profts, how. ver, which can be made, and tre extreme difculty of tracing and proving abnormal consignments und suspicious wastage, there is, unfort unately, no doubt that on immense amount of these dangerous drugs continue to forter"and"; supply › the demands of addicts,
Ease in Smuggling.
The three commonest druga "hus circulated are, of course, morphine, heroin, and cocaine. But, in the particular case to which attention has just been called, the drag dealt in was chiefly heroin. It is this drug that, in recent years, has far onistripped both morophing and cocaine as the principal article cf illicit commerce.

This has become so pronounced a feature of the problem confronting those ongaged in the suppression of the dangerous drug traffic that i special international committee of investigation was appointed last year by the Council of the League of Nations to consider its properties and possible substitutes from a social and medical standpoint. BELAWAN-DELI. This committee, unpion" which the
Cremer, J.C.J.L., Sept late Professor W. E Dixon, of Cambridge, was the English repres sentative, made an exhaustive ex amination which was recently nu bished...
Heroin, diamorphine or diacetyl. morphins hydrochloride, is a white crystalline powder with many medi- cal advantages. In the relief of pain it is thout twice as effective as morphine, and can therefore be ased in smaller doses. It is fres from the constipating effects of mor- phine, and is particularly effective in the alleviation of painful cough- ng and other respiratory disorders. Unfortunately, from the point of view of the addict, it has other ad- vantages over morphine. It can hs. used as snuff. In the Enst it is co- casionally smoked.
Extremely Hard to Curejo
From the point of view of its ine gal exploiters it has still further advantages, Addiction to heroin in much easier to acquire than addie- tion to morphine, and far harder to breaks,
Its effects are also more disastrous o, the unhappy victim. Judgment, attention, self-control, are early affected, and become rapidly won kened; and with the change of character, induced by continual in dulgence, there is established, in the words of the committee, an utter disregard for the conventions and.
orals of civilisation."
Heroin addiction is extremely hard to "eure. Sudden, withdrawal may lead to fatal resulte, Couva lescence is long and painful, both psychically and physically.
So impressed indeed were the committen by the facts and figures that came before them, and notably by the consumption of heroin that could not be accounted for upon la gitimate medical grounds, that they came to the conclusion, that its social dangers definitely outweigh. edits therapeutic importances."
A Medical Substitute, Fortunately, in codeine, another morphine derivative, they were biz to recommend a substitute that is nearly as effective as heroin in its particular power of relieving pain- fal respiratory disorders, and no. which 38 far less liable to provoke nhabit than either heroin or mor phine itself.
