YOUTH-FALL IN LOVE!

OF A 70-YEAR-OLD SCIENTIST

WHEN YOU MEET HER.

Seventy years old, Sir J. Ar thur Thomson, the famous. bicio gist, given these words of advice to men and women of all ages:

To young people: Fall in love. Middle-aged: Avoid and debts to oneself. They are phyable in old age, and it is not plaisant.

.

The aged: Gel young again. Join the souirty of the old and bol.

Sir Arthur was speaking on Life's uplifts and pitfalls,'

At the Oxford Summer School of the British Social Hygiene Council. Ho said:

Falling in love is really rising in love. This chapter in life has mare possibilities of uplift than any other MA

It is a pity that so much em phasis is laid on the physiologien and so littly on the paychological side of youth. Love is one of the two or three greatest opportunities in life. "What is love? It has thren moles which Browning has sound buta. salmude not elord. They are:

Physient fonduese, which in dispensable;

Emotional attraction linked to the purely physien! attraction through the appeal of duty and

strength; and

The note often aissed altogether of higher sympathies in intel- gence, purpose, and ideals which mean decency and good living,

There is a prcat tendency to mako a scapegoat of sex. The trouble is that youth is sc mis educated. 1 do not blame the tea- cher only.

The Safeguard.

The fact is that youth has so for big interests and hus erased to strive after higher values. The safeguard is to fall in love.

"Surely every boy and girl has a sheaf of admirations ngendered: by reading goud history-history that has not had the life squeezed out of it by reading good bio- graphies, net bowdlerised, or by the example of men and "women round about them.

"Some day three admiratiqna which the boy has cherished in Recret find, & focus or personál centre in some creature for whom he has devotion, and towards whom he feels an obeisance, won- dering that she, that wonderful being, should ever condescend to lock upon him.

"

"Then we come to marriage and maturity, when one lays aside all jargons and tries to be just simple, There are three anils in the hap py married voyage:

Physical fondness, which can. not be successfully dispensed with except in rare cases:

eciprocal sympathy; and

a partnership in high purpose, the sharing of certain ideals and intellectual leanings, "Without these, I do not think 8 completely successful married life is possible."

His Own Love-Making. Referring to a previous confes sion that in his own case looking back to love-making was a long reminiscence, Sir Arthur explam ed:

i

"I do not mean looking back to a distant time. The reality re | mains, of course. For two beings so complex and diverse as man and woman, the whole of life. is. not too long for them to know one another well and love one another worthily."

And to close, Sir Arthur Bajd:

Those who play best will work heat, live best and love best."
