THE THORBURN MYSTERY.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY CONSULATE GENERAL.
MILITARY ATTEMPT TO STIFLE CASE.
The efforts made by Shanghai consular officials to sclve the myatory of the disappearance of Mr. John Thorburn, who left his and who is believed to be in home on Monday, June 1, the custody of the military policy at Souchow, are given in a statement to the Press issued by H. M. Consulate General.
The fact that "the Military are a law to themselves" has added. to the difficulties encountered but HM. Minister is pressing the Minister for Foreign Affairs to institute a commission inquiry into the affair. The official statement is as follows :*
INQUIRY DEMANDED.
John Hay Thorburn, agod 19, loft his home on the evening of May 31. He had for some time. been talking about going away to "mako good." He was a member of the Machine Gun Section of the Shanghai Light Horne and had been a member of the Sen Scout Troop. Both these points are signi- ficant in view of later happenings, He apparently took with him the dress trousers of the Light Horso, ie a pair of bine trousers with two red stripes down the sides, and his service reveiver, these articles being missing from his home..

Further witnesses stat- ed that he was subsequently put on the 1.15 p.m. train and sent to Sonchow. He had his hands tied behind his back and ho was escorted by ten or more military polios. If he went by this train he would have had to change at Wusih and would have arrived at Scochow at about three o'clock. Inquiries were made at Soochow through different Mr. A. Our market opened with a fair amount of activity, but since the satisfactory negotiation of the heavy June Settlement,, a slightly quieter tone has prevailed.. The volume of business put through has been only on a moderate scale, But prices generally speaking remain atoady with a few improvements registered there and there. Ruany, June 23. The results of the census recently taken at the Gold Coast show that there have been striking increases amongst the African population, the total population of the four territories administered by the Gold Const. The abstential increase is ad- tributed mainlé to immigration and to the fact that the increases in communication which have taken place in recent years have enabled a more accurate enumeration to be made.
