LIFEBOAT HERO'S DEATH.

EPIC OF INDIAN CHIEF."-

With the death of Mr. Charler Verrion, of Ramsgate, at the age- of 85, has passed away the last suzyivor of the Ramsgato lifeboat crew, which, just over fifty years ago, carried out one of the 'most thrilling rescues in the story of the British consts.

This was the saying of the lives of twelve survivors of the crew of twenty-nine mon of the barque In- dian Chief.

The Indian Chief was outward bound from Middlesbrough to

Yokohama, and was wrecked on the Long Sand, off the mouth of the Thames, in an easterly gale in the

Barly morning of January 5, 1881. It was not until noon that the news reached Ramsgate, 30 milea away, and the lifeboat City of Bradford put out at once, being towed by the tug Vulcan. Among the lifeboat crew was Charles Ver- ricn who has just died.
