Reday, June 19. Tho trade returns for the month of May show n. slight in- "crease in the value of exports is compared with those of April.and March, but as compared with the returns for May of last year heavy decreases in both imports and px- ports are recorded.
The imports for the month, valued at £00,00,000, were, lower by over £21,000,000 than those of May-of last year; and the exporte valued at £39,000,000 showed, a decrease of £20,000,000...
The reduction in values, owing to the world-wide shump, in to m large extent responsible for the de-

A significant feature of the figures is the considerable expansion on the month in the value of exports of vehicles, including locomotives, mctor cars, ships, and aircraft; which has risen from $2,400,000 to

1,000,300,000 Francs for putting NO DUMPING OF U.S.
them into effect?
This was done although some gur- prise had been caused by the stato- mohts of the Minister who, after declaring that the present naval agreements allowed France to build two cruisers of 35.000 tone each, said that naval authorities preferred to build three cruisers of 23,000 tone each instead. These ships would, he believed, be superior to the latest German pocket-battleship.

Cotton Place, Goode,
Business is reported in black poplins, black cotton venetiana. black cotton coatings, etc. for August/September shipment. There are also enquiries in the market for white mattings although little for nothing appears to have been booked in this style. Manchester prices are considerably easier.

Further business has been report- ed in piecegoods but mainly in creased quantities, on" standard lines bonked in bulk some weeks ago. In the main the bookings are comparatively small. Both Brad- ford and Continental prices for piecepcods and yarns show a slight ly easier tendency:

WHEAT.
HOW SURPLUS WILL BE SOLD.
An announcement that the United States has no intention of dumping
its vast surplus of wheat was made at a conference, at Canada House, of representatives of wheat-export- ing countries.
According to figures presented by 31r. Samuel R. McKelvic, the leader of the American delegation, the United States carry-over this July will probably be 175,000,000 bushels or more above a normal carry-over, while the 1931 crop may contain an export surplus of about 200,000,000 bushels.
In some subsequent commeats,on Mr. McKelvie's statement, the president of the conference, Mr. G. Howard Ferguson (High Commis. sioner for Canada) said:
"The conference was greatly im pressed by the announcement that The United States has no intention of dumping any portion of its wheat. storage, but intends to deal with it on an orderly basis, and thus, so far as it is concerned, to maintain as far as possible a stabilised con- dition in the wheat market.”
Merchandising the Surplus,
In his speech to the conference- which is being held in private-Mr. McKelvic, after recalling the opera- Act, said it was not intended, and tion of the Agricultural Marketing it was not practicable, to continue indefinitely the policy of stabilising purchases, and the Federal Farm Board would not authorise such purchases from the 1931 crop.
To the question, what plans there are for disposing of the stocks thus acquired," he said. "there is and can be no highly ex-| plicit answer, Simply expressed, however, it is this: they will be sold, but they will be merchandised in orderly fashion; they will not be thrown overboard for anything they will bring, to demoralise domestic and foreign markets:
"There are somic, both in our country and abroad, who have sought to excite, the fears of the gullible portion of the trade and the public over the large supplies that are or will be under the con- trol of the Stabilisation Corpora tion. These fears are not justi fied,"
The official report of the proceed. ings states that a general discus sion followed Mr. McKelvie's ad dress, in which several delegations took part, and the conference con- and sidered the possible ways means of approaching the question of concerted action.
