FOLK SONGS AND DANCES.

TO-MORROW'S FESTIVAL AT DIOCESAN GIRLS' SCHOOL.

The programme for the Festival to be held from 3. p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the grounds of the Diocesna Girls' School has now been 'com.

pleted and the organisers feel that

with the price of admission at the modest sum of 81, an entertainment of such interest and variety should receive the support of the public, especially as the proceeds are be ing divided between two deserving funds the St. John Ambulance Brigade and St. Andrew's Church Organ Fund. The organisers hope that these funds will benefit süh stantially by the Festival but they have kept the price of admission as low as possible because they wish to spread enthusiasm for the preservation of beautiful, tradi- tional and national songs and dan ces, many of which, but for the foresight of such men

да Сесі Sharpe, would have been lost to the world.

The origin of some of the English dance to be seen on Saturday goes back some two thousand years and enthusiasts for folk dancing fee! that these dances which enshrine Bu touch of the spirit of "Merric England" are a heritage to be preserved as carefully as a paint- ing by an old master. Also, it is well-known that in every land the. folk music has inspired the great composers.

A Worthy Object.

The Festival, too, has as its ub- ject the promotion of mutual un- derstanding and good fellowship between the various races and na.. tionalities resident here. It is be lieved that all who come will be enabled to enter into a deeper un derstanding of other nations as they so the spirit of those natione interpreted in their songs and dan- rex, and that while taking pride in their own nation's contributions, they will find much to admire in those of other nationalities,
