DIRECTIONAL TRANSMIS- SION AND RECEPTION.
· (Continued fróm Page 2.)
Rotating Loop Transmitters and Other Types.
Another method of obtaining the bearing of a ship from n known point ashore is by menus of the' Rotating Loon directional transmit ter. Only one station of this typu exists at present the experimental transmitter at Oxfordness-and it operates on the well-known prin- oiple that a loop aerial will give maximum radiation of power in the direction of its own plane. With this transmittor a clear aito must o chosen for erection, to ensure no obstruction or interference with radiation, and it is essential - to build it on and because of the necessity of the signals-being trans. mitted when the loop is pointing toward certain points of the com раяв. This prohibits ita erection on such valuable navigation marks as the Morsey Bar, Spurs, and Coningheg Light vessels, which already carry fixed beacon trans- mitters. It is true that this method of Direction Finding needs only an
ordinary receiver and a stop-watch on the ship to enable bearings to be taken, but what at first sight seems to be an economy is rather the revorae.. when all things are considered. The cost of a Direc- tion Finder is saved, but, on the other hand the ship is deprived of the means of taking bearings, of any station other than a rotating loop transmitter, and 'even if these were increased to world-wide use, would still be impossible to take bearings of lightvessels and other ships without a Direction Finder. Then again, the tremendous differ- ence between the rotating loop and the fixed beacon in both first cost find maintenance, to which the ship- owner must ultimately contribute, would be more than sufficient to cover the cost of many Direction Finders,

Talking pictures offer tremendous opportunities for comedies, says Charlie Murray, one of the featured players in Universal's rollicking picture, The Cohens and Kellys in Scotland," coming to the screen of the Queen's Theatre on Sunday.
"For instance," Murray stated, "dialect has long been an im | portant phake of "comedy on the stage.
