LOVELY WOMAN IN RUSSIA.
(Continued from Page 1.)
Perhaps nothing, more clearly de-. picts the new freedom of Russian women than an hour in the mar ringe and divorce bureau, In less than half that time I saw two marriages and three divorgen in n Moscow bureau. A marriage re- quires for the entire ceremony the presence of both parties, answers to a lew questions, the showing of a workers' cord, and then the writ- ing of the marriage in the register.
To be divorced is even simpler.. In only one of the divorces that I saw were both husband and wife present to state their intention Both of the other to separate. divorces were given, to wives who merely announced their wish to separate from their husbands.
But, of course, the pinee to learn mut about the emancipation of Russian women is from that group of feminine leaders, who, either through their services to the re- volution or through sheer ability, have climbed into places of autho- rity with the present Government,
I sat at sapper with a dozen of the most prominent of such wohen, including a chief prosecntor for the Soviet Government, and her assist- ant, a young mother who is called a daughter of the revolution, be causo she was orphaned as the re sult of an ediet in the Tsar's time and brought up in an institution. Her period of apprenticeship in a factory served, and her training once gained, she has been appoint- nd to the office of the proscentor: In addition, there was a woman' senlptor, a woman professor' in the State University, the_wotnan librarian from the State Library. and several workers' inspectors.
Freedom!
Each of them told something about her own work. And they dis dussed the broad education pro- gramme which is being carried out. to reach all women. Now, ther told me, 300 women are members of the "presidiums" of the Soviets, and 1,000,000 of thein this year were delegates at local meetings repré-, senting 4,500,000 working women.
What distinguished them all was their sense of definite superiority over the women of every other. country.
Women in other nations have theoretical independence, but it is quly in the Union of Socialist -Soviet Republics that women be- long to themselves." was their n sertion, and therein they raised the question which the women of the entire world are facing.
"Women are freer souls than men, a prominent American busi- ness woman said recently, they are less bound by tradition, habit, even by law.'
Womon in Soviet Bussin are- re- ceiving a measure of freedom from housework and from social laws of marriage, and they are obtaining an opportunity to express them- selves in business, professions, and politics beyond the women of most of the rest of the world, although not even in Russia have women as yet achieved the highest positions in party or government.
What this new freedom of be longing to themselves" will mean in their own development and to their participation in world affairs, once their energy and ability for organization is unleashed through out the world, is something which is well worth consideration.
