RECREIO'S FINE WIN
Kowloon Seconds, Drop Further Points,
Playing at home; Club de Recreio 'did extremely well to beat the strong Kowloon Cricket Club 2nd XI. by four wickets..
Kowloon batted first, but against some steady bowling they met with early disaster, five wickets falling for only 10 runs. Bucked by this success, the Recreio bowlers had their tails up and eventually got the side out for 60 runs. A. R. F. Raven (12) was the only man to get into double figures... For the home team, Souza (4 for 22), Alves (3 for 30) and Pereira (2 for 3) shared the wickets.
With only 07 runs needed for a win, it looked as if it would be an easy thing for the Portuguese lads. They did not, however, start too well, for, bowling with an accurata length, Skinner soon sent the first three batsmen back to the pavilion. Then J. H. Figueriedo and F. H. Carvalho engaged in a bright part nership which yielded it runs. The former had 60, while Carvalho made

TWO MORE PERFORMANCES ON WEDNESDAY,
The Westminster Glee Singers have undoubtedly proved themselves to be one of the most delightful attractions Hong Kong has been privileged to patronise for quite a long time, and the matinee held on Saturday afternoon fulfilled the highest expectations of its promo- ters by drawing a very large audience to the Theatre”, Royal, whose appreciation added to the reputation already earned by this talented group of vocalists. Par ticular attention had been devoted to the inclusion of selections on the programme which would suit the. tasion of the youthful audience ex- pected to attend, and the young. sters were not. glor to show their appreciation of the very excellent number of songs and humourous pieces presented, their demands for encores being as vociferously ex- pressed as their elders could have demanded.

In the December 16-19 (1029) issues of the Moji Shimpo, there appeared the following interesting article dealing with this gubject, by Mr. Enosuko Nakamura:
In Japan, from a big ocean. going liner to a small river cráft, each has a name with the suffix "Maru," As to its origin and the as of its derivation, different views have been expressed by men of knowledge, thus:-- 1.dccording to an old legend, in ancient China, under the roign of the Emperor Kotei, thore was a man by the name of Tai- to-ghi to whom a messenger from Beaver, called Hakudo Maru, appeared and taught him the art of shipbuilding. Since thon, ships are said to have bean named with the Bufix "Maru" in deference to the instructor.
2.In olden times in Japan, family Dunes often bad the suffix "Maru" appended, just 8 ya" is added to names of business houses at present. This is said to be a dérivation of the word "Maru" applied to shine.
3.To call a ship "Maru" is, ac-
cording to the heavenly system, the same as to call the towers of a castio Hon-maru, Nino- maru, etc.
4.-The
name is derived from divination.
The Shrine of Shiga Myojin in Shigashima Isle. in Chikuzen' Province io dedicated 40 Akumo-Maru, a deity supposed to live under the water. Sufix.
ing" Mara" to names of Japanese ships is due to rover- ence, to this deity. -To address n man
or express oneself, Mary (or maro); Was often used in the old times. Thus there were the names Fujiwara - no - Maro, Kaki-no- moto.no
Hitoma.ro, Abc-no Nakamaro, etc. Among boys. who subsequently became great men were Hiyoshi Maru and Ushiwaka Maru. Domestic animals, such as horses and dogs, wore also called by the endearing name of: “ Maru": such as Betsu Maru for a borse, and Owina Maru, for a dog, Towers of a castle' were called Hon-Maru, Nino-Maru; etc., because people in former days had a prejudice against square. ness in the plan of castle. building, and called the towers "Maru" (meaning roundnica) in contradiction to their shapes, 7-Maro was originally a Bolf- depreciatory word standing for oneself, as "I" or "myself" but it gradually became a word
