LOCAL GOLFERS DRAW WITH PROS.

SHEWAN JUST FAILS AT LAST HOLE.

Yesterday's four-ball match at Fanling between' Bobby Cruickshank and Wild BOL Mehlhorn, the well-known American golf profes sionals, and I. W. Shewan and O. E. C. Martou, two of the leading local, amateurs, resulted in the game being drawn at the 18th hole.

In view of the claim mudo re- cantly by the Americans that they would each do the round in 70 (5 less than bogey), it was interest ing to see how they would fate on the greens, for this is where they failed in the exhibition game.

Actually if their best aggregato Acoro is taken for the round, they totalled 09.

Marton Brillant.

Of the four players there is no doubt Marton played the most billiantly he won the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes for the amateurs, each of these holes with scores one under para remarkable performance. Shewan was very erratic at times. If he and played up to form the Amateurs would have won.

1

As for the professionals they played a sound game throughout. They did not seem to have got the hang of the green, but were per haps a little unlucky,

At the 1st hole Marton was short with his tee shot, but ninde à fine approach, and the hole was lialved for 4.

At the 2nd Cruickshank sliced his drive, but the others were well up, and a beautiful approach shot by Marton gave the amateurs the lead.

Marton Drives On the Groon,

At the short 3rd Marion again hit a lovely tee shot to within a few foot of the pin, and sank his patt for a "bridie," a 2-2 up to the amateurs!

At the 4th hole, as the result of another fino approach by Marton, and the sinking of a 6-yard putt, the amatours weutstill further ahend to lead by 3 holes.

At the 8th. Marion pulled his drive, and the Americans should have won this hole, but weak putt ing by the professionals enabled the amateurs to halve.

At the 8th both Cruickshank and Shewan got down in 4. and the hole was halved,

At the short 7th both amateurs were in the rough, and the hole. was gained by the professionals. Mehlhorn was unlucky not to get n "bridie" for his putt lipped the hole, but did not go in..

At the 8th Cruickshank outdrove the others by a gond 20 yards, but missing a 2yards putt, the hole was halved.

Both amateurs pulled their tec shots badly at the 9th, which went to the professionals. Thus at the turn the amateurs were one hole up, but at the 10th Shewann's drive only just trickled over the top of the hill, and he made a poor second shot, but Marton came to the rescue and the hole was halvod The 11th was halved for a "bridie," na also was the 12th.

A Good Recovery.

At the 13th both amateurs were off the fairway, but Marton made a marvellous recovery from the long was halved. grass and the hole Cruickshank used a spoon at the 14th and placed his shot within a fow foot of the pin-the distance of this hole being 250 yards. This hole went to the professionals, but the 18th went to the amateurs. Shawan made a good drive, a fine approach shot, and then holed a 15-yard putt for an "eagle" 3-8 superlative performance.

Showan capped this by placing his approach at the 16th within 2 yards of the pin, sinking his putt!

The evidence shows that the affair was due to a chapter of mis understandings and that the fort is to blame in the first instance for an unintelligible signal, which oven- sioned a badly aimed warning shot. The captain of the vessel in also found to be blemeworthy for over- looking the notices on his sailing permit.

The opinion is expressed that he he saw an unintelligible signal from should have stopped immediately

This might be termed the musical philosophy of Mr. Edward Brans combe, the director of the West- minster Glee Singers, who arrived in Hong Kong with his company on the steamer Presiden Jackson yesterday.

To meet and talk to Mr. Branis combe is refreshing experionca because he seems to have a faculty for turning every experience in life to some practical 1180. His views on music aro both novel and interesting. Among the citations which com prised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he re vived," (1 Kings 17; 17 and 22). “
