NEW LIGHT ON THE NURSE CAVELL EXECUTION,

Brussels-Striking fresh light is thrown on the Nurse Cavell tragedy by the publication of an extract from the diary of the Marquis de Villalobar, who, as Spanish Am- bassador in Brussels during the war, played a prominent part in the drama.

At dawn on October 12, 1018, Miss Edith Cavell, charged with aiding soldiers of the Allied armies to escape from Belgium, was shot in Brussels.

The Marquis de Villalobar relates how, while he was dining on the evening of October 11, with Baron

The marquis goes on to say that a few days before the execution General Baron von Bissing, the German Governor of Belgium, had left owing to illness, and had appointed in his place General von Sauberzweig

The marquis had a long conver sation alone with the baron, and enid, "Miss Cavell may have sent hundreds of men to the front by: means of her ambulance, but if you kill her she will send 'millions against you from her tomb.”

Baron von der Lancken snid that he realised all this, but that General Von Sauberzweig was not to be moved-" he wants to kill her:"

The marquis then made his final throw. He suggested to the baron that he should telephone the Em- peror, whose headquarters were not
