"GOOD TO END HER AMATELY DRAMATICS AT

SUFFERINGS.”

.HUSBAND'S ALLEGED

STATEMENT.

MURDER CHARGE.

A remarkable statement alleged Is have been made by a husband, declaring that in view of iris wife's state of health he thought he would be "doing her n'good turn by put ting an end to her sufferings," was read at West London Police Court last month, when Charlos Augustus Galichot, aged fifty-two, a French subject, was committed for itmal at the Central Criminal Court on a charge of murdering his wife, Maud Minnie Galichot, agad forty zeven, on July 23.

Garichet reserved his defence. It was alleged that Galichet call. ed at Walham Greon polico station and said that he had killed his wife by striking her on the head with a flat iron. The woman was found dead in bed with wounds on the head.

Mr. Vincent Evans, prosecuting, Raid that Galichet made the follow Fing statement at the nolics

ntation:--

KOWLOON.

ST. ANDREW'S CLUB SECOND CONCERT.

At the panteur dramatic concert organised by nombers of the St. Andrew's Club which was held at the St. Andrew's Church Hall, Kowloon, last evening, two sketches, together with musical items and monologues, were presented to a very large, andioncu,

Of the two plays "The Crimson Coconut," a farce written by Inn Ilay, was more enjoyable, the splendid acting of the whole cast coupled with the vary witty naturo. ter. Tho audience word put into of the lines provoked much laugh- good humour right from the begin- ning, when the C.I.D. man (Mr. Anthony L. Cole) appeared on the scene, till the moment the curtain dropped. Mr. J. W. Baldwin's act ing in particular was very clover, and he received excellent support from the other members, A.. L. Cole, Norman Mackay, Richard Wong, Rita Cole and Maud White.

The other-sketch presented wAS "The Boy Comes Home," by A. A. Milne, in which the principal rôles were taken by Mr. Reginald Woolley and Mr. S. A. Sweet, both of whom wore confronted with some difficult seting, which, however, did not appear to perturb them in any way. The other members respon- sible for this short but enjoyable production were Phyllis Woolley, Marjorie White and Rita Cole.

Other artiste, who contributed to the success of the evening were Miss Winifred Robinson and Miss Mc-

Mr. S. A. Sweet was the producer of both plays, and he is to be con- gratulated on his success.

I have been in indifferont health for a year or more, and more par-Gill (at the piano), Mr. 8. A. ticularly, during the last three or Sweet (monologue) and Mr. C. W. four months. The point in Liddon-Cola (vocalist). nutshell is my long of sleep, loss of physical strength, lack of con centration, also loss of appetite leading to a depresiod condition a tondeney to worry unnecessarily. I have not the strength of mind to keep this worry to myself, and this naturally affected any wife's health considerably. She suffered in the past from angina pectoris, but had been free from, attacks for a considerable period; but worry consequent on my state of mind caused the attacks to recur, so that we were both very often in a low physical condition.

Suffering Acutely.

My wife has been the very best helpmate a man could have-always grooting me with a smile and kind words, even when suffering very acutely herself.

There is nothing, whatever, I could reproach hor with. Seeing her suffering more and more and falling away physically, and feel- ing that my condition was not im- proving, led to a slate of mind that seemed to demand some action or other.

My wife and I had been review- ing things and coming 'to the con clusion that the future held very little to make life worth living.

One of her last remarks was, "How nice it would be to pass away peacefully in one's sleep."

This the fact that I had hardly any sleep during the past two or three nights, and my wife's condi- tion pointing clearly to a completo treakdown-ted me to think 1 would be doing her a good turn in putting an end to her worries and sufferings.

I had no definite idea as to the best means to that end, and the flat iron was chceon only through my noticing it in the kiteken just be fore going to my bedroom.

two

My wife had been asleep hours or more when I retired about. 1.10. She woke up shortly after wards and was surprised to see me fully dressed.

We held short conversation while I pretended to get rondy for bed. My wife, however, needs a considerable amount of steep, and soon went to sleep again.

It was not until approximately 5.20 a.m. that I struck her. She attered a pitiful little cry between the first and the second blow, but not again after that.

I remained in the house until about 4 p.m., but I did not go to bed. I heated some water and washed my wife's face.

Eventually I surrendered at Wal- ham Groen police station shortly after 4p.ru.

Mr. Evans said that in the doc- tor's opinion the immediate cause of death was asphyxia caused by strangulation, a contributory cause being shock and hemorrhage from the wounds.

"SEXTON BLAKE"

HIS STAGE DEBUT.

- ?

For more than twenty yani, biex- tan Blake has been tho schoolboy's Sherlock Holmes. He has aped the nanners of Iris original for so long that plagiary secina now too harsh a word to describe the imitation Indeed, many, a boy whon intro- duced to Doyle's' 'detective must havo exclaimed ""What a crib on Sexton Blako!" Let bs regard these two detvebives, therefore, as equally great in their respectivo spheres, us' gonial rivals in the art of bolstering up the reputation of Beotland Yard by solving (always anonymously) the mysteries which baffle the police. As both detectives live in. Baker Street it is oven pos sible they call on each other, and cachange intelligence. Holmes, who has often been seen on the stage, may have persuaded Blake to try the experiones. At вду rate, faithful in imitation, Blake has gone on the stage, and he made a most auccessful debut at the Prince Edward' Theatro London inst month.

:

The curtain rose to discover the outside of a house in Lowndes Square from the top window of which enate the shricks of a femalo in distress. So a stolid policoman knocked at the door. "Let us sen what is the matter" he said in such carefree tones the he must have known that Soxton Blake was on his way to the square. Before the door was open the great detective was there ready to walk upstairs And find a cas ready for him. A man stabbed and beside his body a message signed by "3fr. Mid- sight," a homicidal crook who from his description is only brother to Moriarty, the master criminal who Lept Holmes so busy,

From the moment of that murder to its solution Blake never rested, and wherever he wont we followed him. In the strict sense of the word this play by Mr. Donald Stuart is drame we are shown the thing done. Actions are not talked about or the stage while they take place "of. If Blake, from his study window, sees a lady walking along Baker Street, and if the villain is determined to kidnap that lady tefors she brings to the detective important evident, we are shown Loth scenes, as at the kinema. If the villain tries to blow up Baker Street in order to kill Blake, wa both sea and hear the explosion, an extraordinarily loud and ter cifying explosion it is too. When Blake's assistant, Tinker, is chas ing a suspicious taxi on his mo torbike, that taxi honks its way across the footlights, followed by Tinker on a "sure enough" pro. duct of Coventry. When, finally, the villain tries to cacape by smash- ing his car through the gates of a levelcrossing, and is killed by the roaring express, even that scene is not baulked. No wonder the su thor, after thanking the company, draw on to the stage the embar ransed figure of Mr. Owen, the stage director, for without Mr. Owen's excellent management of the "noises of the play would have

Mr. Arthur Wontrer makes commanding figure of the great letective A fine bit of acting was given by Mr. Harcourt Brooke as n low-class crook. Miss Eve Gray auffered the usual fate of heroines in this sort of play, and spent most of her time being kidnapped and roped up in dark collars. ́All the small parts are, woll' done. The only disappointment of the even- ing was the bloodhound. He had an attack of stagefright and refus- ou to appear.
