purpose.

Period Buildings,

In the English open-air museum, as the suggestion stands, the actual peasants cottages of different periods and of different types will be re-erected in the semblance of an English village. Each building will be provided with its proper furnishing of appropriate character and contemporary in date with the cottage. Domestic implements and atensils and the appliances of the domestic crafts, euch as spinning and weaving, will each be found in its customary place.

The Example of Wales.

The recently instituted folk- galleries in the National Muscum of Walca at Cardiff have in part been arranged on this plan, different alcoves representing kitchen, bed- room, and so forth. Provision will be made, in out-buildings, in the CHINA-BIOCHEMICAL CO. wind and water mill, the smithy,

carpenter's quarters, and so on for the representation of the vilinge arts and crafts, among which the implements and appurtenances of agriculture will naturally take a prominent place. The reconstructed village will have an ita centre the village green with its stocks, pound, and maypole. In time, if space allows, the exhibits will range ih historical sequence at least from the close of the Roman occupation, or possibly earlier, down to recent times.

Arousing Public Interest.

It is an easy matter for the specialist to overrate the educa tional influence of a museum. By the average individual it is too often regarded as a repository for: the curious and the obsolete. The popularity of the open-air culture muzeum in Scandinavia is remark- able. It has aroused the greatest interest among the people in their national history and culture. There is no reason to think that the result will be different in this country, and perhaps when the visitor to the open-air museum is able to follow the thread of continuity in the life of his ancestors, as exhibited in

the surroundings in which they actually lived and among the tools and utensils they handled, there may be borne in upon him an under- standing of the function of tradi tion as a key to the national genius which has made for stability among the changes we call pro gress.

ALLEGED INDIGNITIES.

PREMIER'S REPLY TO. PROTEST.

Correspondence which passed be-- tween the Prime Minister of Aus- tralia (M Scullin) and the Con- Bul-General for Chinn Mr. F. T. Sung) resently in regard to the alleged indignities, imposed upon Chinese nationals, by Customs officials has been inade available.

Mr. Sung protested against the taking of finger-printe, and said that it was difficult to convince the average. Chinese that the practice was followed for other than criminal purposes. In regard to the ban on the entry of wives of Chinese people resident in Au tralia, Mr. Sung pointed out that in 1928 there were 13.614 Chinese males, and only 185 Chinese females in Australia, and remarked that conditions resulting from the re- fusal to lift the ban tended to im morality or to increasing the num bor of marriage with. Australian women. An effort was being made. to obtain a complete register of the Chinese in Australia, and it was urged that when it was establish- ed, all registered Chinese should be free from liability to arrest, trial,
