"Major Faulkner was a tireless worker," continued the school of. cial.
"The school was very snevessful It was largely used by public school and college hoys for training, and raany prominent county cricketors practised here,"
Beside Major Faulkner's body was a vote and a cheque for £200, made out to Mrs. Faulkner, who original ly was Mejor Faulkner's secretary, and who was married to him a little
over two years ago..
"
Mrs. Faulkner stated that her hushend's health had been affected recently by too much work.
He had been hard at it," she' said," from six o'clock in the morn ang until nine at night for a long time. He had a breakdown in health last year, and that was un- deniably due to overwork."
When-Jack Hobbs heard the nows at Scarborough he said: "It is a great shock, for it was only last Saturday week that we spoke to- gether on the wireless, and he was very cheery then."
Notable Record.
Born in the Transvaal in Decem. ber 1881, Major Faulkner first be same prominent in cricket in South, African inter-State matches in 1906, and subsequently represented his country on occasions, in Test natches. In the opinion of many he was one of the best all-round cricketers South Africa ever pro- duced. As a batsman he was al- ways a little cramped at the start of an inninga, but he made runs all round the wicket and was particu larly proficient with the strike, Second only to Vogler as an exponent of the "googly," his remarkable consistency of length, coupled with his ability to turn the ball either way, enabled him to ne complish some remarkable bowling performances.
pull
He played a great part in the Test matches against England in 1507, dismissing twelve mon at a cost of under 10 runs each, and in the second Test at Leeds he dis posed of six England batsmen for 17 runs in the first inninga. In 1010 in Australia he headed, the South African Test batting aver ages with 732 runs and an average of 73.20, and in all the matches of that tour he scored 2,080 run and obtained 60 wickets. Among his four centuries be included an in- nings of 204 in the Test, at Mel- bourne. When he came to live in this country he had, in first-class cricket, scored 5,873 rans and taken 404 wicketą.
