TRAINING FOR SHOP LIFE.
NEED FOR EXPERT SALESMEN,
*
Speaking at the Drapers' Cham ber of Trade Summer School nt Cambridge laat month, Mr. S. A Williams, principal of the Londou County School of Retail Distribu- tion, said: "We have an excellent system of training school in this country for engineers, for ar chitects, in fact, for almost every trade except that of retail dis tribution. What we need is scien tific training for retail distribution, on a basis equal to that of the train- ing now given for engineering
"Some people have the impres- sion that anybody can sell things That is ridiculous. We could all give instances of business being lost and customers alienated by inexpert salesmen. There is no trade in which the personal quality of the people engaged in it is more im. portant than it is in the drapery trade. There is virtually no ma chinery in a shop, and the whole success of it depends entirely upon the personal qualities, of the in- dividuals, employed there. Whate ever improvements and develop- ments are made, this personal quality will always remain the prims factor."
Mr. Williams added that it was the duty of the trade itself to formulate what kind of education it wasted for its young people and then to cooperate with the educa- tion authorities. Little could be done without that guidance and help from the trade.

game went on for a period of twelve years, when the syndicate for some reason. no longer continued the lucrative scheme, and it passed into the, hands of the printers who pro duced the stamps of Switzerland.

It might he thought that this circumstance places the stamps of this country on higher and sounder-footing, but in my humble opinion such is not the ense, since the issues continue to come fast and. furious The requirements of this place cannot possibly demand such a prolific output, and collectors should, therefore, use sound judg. ment in the choice of stamps emanating from Liechtenstein if they wish their collections to be representative of postage stamps.

On November 23, 1892, the Gover nor in Council made another rule under the Stomp
