SHIP'S ENGINEER SAVES COLLEAGUE,
DANGEROUS DIYE FROM
MOVING VESSEL.
An act of extreme bravery, says the M.O. Daily Netra, has just come to light, the plunging over hoard of a ship's engineer officer at Woosung to help abrother engineer who had fallen overboard, The hero of the occasion is Mr D. F. Stratton, supernumerary 3rd Engineer of the steamer Hsin Peking..

EX-GOVERNOR'S PLEA FOR
CENSOR.
Sir. Hasketh Bell, ex-governor of Mauritius, Nigeria, Uganda, and the Leeward Islands, addressing a meeting of the British Empire by institute at the House of Commons last month, declared that immense. harm had been done by the cinema among the antive races of the. world, notably in the tropics. Be- fore the advent of the films, he said, The Hsin Peking, of the China natives in primitive and semi- Navigation Co.'s Beet, runs re-primitive territories had hardly gularly between Shanghai, and Ningpo, and last Kriday was on her way outward bound. The incident occurred outside Woosung, just be- fore darkness fell, but fortunately there was sufficient light to and room for the ship to he swung around and a boat laaached, which successfully picked up the rescuer and rescued."

The man who fell overboard is Mr. C. F. Hudson, the 2nd Engi- neer, who, it was aubsequently fealized, had been suffering from atomach trouble. Mr. Hudson was taken ill suddenly, and rushed to the railing of the boat deck, on the port side of which the cagi
neers' cabins are situated.
The rail is not very high, and Mr. Hudson is fairly tall. He sud- denly went faint and the next thing he knew was that he was in the water.
Dangerous Dive, "
Nobody on the boat deck saw the accident, but it was observed by Mr. Stratton, who was standing on the saloon deck, just below: Without pausing an instant, Mr. Stratton climbed on to the rail and dived after Mr. Hudson; not pausing to remove any of his clothing.
any conception of the intimate life of white people. Their idea of the ruling race was gained mainly from the district officer and his wife.
"Now," said Sir Hesketh, pic tures displaying the lowest forms of life among white people are exhibited. There are distasteful cabaret episodes, scenes of arson, rape, burglary, and everything that horrifies. The worst thing is the showing of white women in cabaret scenes. Nothing does more harm to the prestige of the white man in the tropics than the spread of living pictures of the wrong sort
Movements of revolt among natives can be traced from the day of the introdnetion of the films. In Kenya a film was watched by the natives showing Indians making an attack upon a white settlement; scattering the men and carrying off that film was shown the natives out- the-women. In the place where numbered the whites by 200 to one. You see the danger.
"I have sat down among some natives when they watched such a Elm," said Sir Hesketh. hooted, whistled, and roared with "They laughter. Particularly able are the long-drawn out oacular objection.. tory scenes."
Mr. Hudson had fallen from a height of some 35 feet into the water, and Mr. Stratton's dire must have been from over 5 feet. When it is realized that the ship was travelling at 12 knots it will be teen that the dive was full of danger, as Mr. Stratton might easily have been knocked out an hitting the water. To this must be added the extreme danger of being hit by a propllor, considerably add ed to in this case as the vessel istionable films came from America, of the twin-screw variety. Also, there was a strong ebb tie flowing

Ship's Boat Lowered.
Mr. Stratton's dive was seen by
Chinese quartermaster, who promptly raised the shout of "man overboard." This was at 6.23 p.m., according to the official report. The rescuer, who is a strong swimmer, soon go to Mr. Hudson and assist ed him to keep afloat until a ship's boat arrived and took them both on beard. From the time of the fall ing overboard to the return of the lifeboat to the ship occupied 25 minutes.
Mr. Hudson was put to bed when he got back to the ship, and on the return to Shanghai was sent to the General Hospital. He is suffering from shock in addition to his sum mer internal troubles, but is pro- grossing as well as can be expect
ed.
Mr. Stratton when seer last on Monday would say nothing regard ing his exploit, and it was only with reluctance that he consented to be photograpfied.
Sir Hesketh said that natives would prefer films describing their own life. Instructional films and comedies would attract them, and be quite harmless. The most objec

Mr. Halford Knight, M.P., who presided, said.it was true but un fortunate that the present genera- tion preferred the cinema to the church. He advocated, an organisa- tion representative "of educational, colonial, and trade interests to en- sure that the right films went to the Crown colonies and protectorates.
Sir Thomas Wilford, High Com- missioner for New Zealand, sug- gested that English film producers should take more care in the marketing of their pictures and ensure that famous film stars were engaged. Why should not Charlie Chaplin be invited to England, be was an Englishman.
The meeting carried a resolution welcoming the recommendations of the recent Colonial Office confer- enee in London, and pledging itself to co-operate with the Colonial Office to ensure the production and distribution of films in the colonies and protectorates for their moral; entertaining and cultural values.

Caught Short."
What kind of compliment do you think best pleases film stars We haven't canvassed the entire indus- try but we have examples from Polly Moran and Marie Dressler who are co-featured in Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer's talking comedy, "Caught Short," now playing, at the Queen's Theatre.
Polly says she nearly grinned twice around her face when one of ter friends unbelted this one: "If all the laughs caused by. Pally, Moran could be gathered together at one place at one time, the battle of the Marne would sound like two small boys shooting pop guns."
E
Even if it were true it would be swell compliment," stated the offervescent Irish Polly."
Miss Dressler best complintent is a memory of other days. She cherished a faded, old clipping from Minneapolis, Minnesota, news- paper which reads: "Iya Mas- cotte, the young girl who plays Barbara tried to hide herself in the chorus but she has a shape which would well win the golden apple."
"Children of Pleasure."
Night life and. high society figure in the latest musical romance of the screen, "Children of Pleasure," Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's" drama of Tin Pan Alley," which will come on Tuesday to the Queen's Theatre. The story of a popular song com poser who marries an heiress, and reminiscent of the romance of Irving Berlin, the new picture shows the inside workings of the business of purveying harmony.
Lawrence Gray plays the title role and Wynne Gibson, Helen John- son, Lee Kohlmar, Kenneth Thoin- son and May Boley are in the cast. Harry, Beaumont directed. Elabo rate song bits and ballets are ming- led with the drama.
