The striking growth of the British dyestuffs industry was emphasized by Sir Henry Sutcliffe Smith, chair- man of the Colour Users' Associa tion, at the annual meeting of the in Manchester last Daociation month. Despite dystuffs. in 'the United Kingdom, ho said, licences granted by the Dyestuffs Advisory Licensing Committee for the im- portation of dyestuffs showed a re- markable increase. Since 1921 the quantity of dyestuffs imported had increased from 2,677,000 lbs. to 5,814,000 lbs. Last year the produc tion of dyestuffs in the United King-

dom showed an increase over 1928 | $26.60 | $263 of 4,878,000 lbs., from which it was inferred that domestic consumption, both of British and foreign' made colour, had increased considerably.

There was definite evidence that the leading British makers desired to bring their prices down to the world's lowest level, irrespective' af the protection afforded to them by $11.80 the 1.75 times pre-War factor which the Licensing Committee continued to operate when considering appli- 8% cations for licences to import dye- staffs on price grounds. Despite the general fall in prices of every com modity, there had been little ör no decrease in the price of benzole and toluole, which were nearly three. times the pre-War price. No doubt the increased demand for these pro- ducts for use as motor fuels was one reason for the high prices, but he strongly urged the manufacturers to assist British dyemakers and the textile trades by reducing prices. Dyestuffs production in this country had increased from 8,000,000 lbs. in 1913 to 35,785,000 lbs. last year: in other words present production was more than six times the 1913 out put. This country now produced more than 30 per cent. of the total consumption as compared with only 23 per cent, before the War,
