HONG KONG TRADE

RETURNS.

FIGURES FOR SECOND

QUARTER.

[COMPARISONS WITH 1924.

լե

The Statistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Department, whith opched on April 1, have issued the Hong Kong trade returns for the quarter ended June 30 of the present year.

The imports for the period under review, including treasure ($25,521.948), amounted to $156,815,- while the exporta totolled $73, $130,494,545 (treasure $24,034,694). This shows a slight increase in dollar value of imports compared with the second quarter of 192 when the returns were last pub lished.

A further source of inaccuracy in April was the fact that no classifica- tion list available to the public was in existence. The present list was not in general circulation until May,

"Sea, Land'or Alr.” Included in the returns are statis- ties of all articles imported and exported whether by sca, land or air: also articles carried by Chinese junks and through the Post Office, with the following exceptions:-1, articles imported and exported by the Colonial Government, Naval and Military Authorities and Royal Air Force; transit cargo: 3, shipa stores: 4, passengera bag gage: 5. travellers' samples (if not for sale): 6, imports into and ex- ports from the New Territories..

An uncertain proportion of the cargo carried by coast and river Yesstis is neither manifested nor declared: this is principally cargo owned by the personnel of the ship, who trade on their own account, as has been the custom for many

years.

JAPANESE CEMENT.

BIG CURTAILMENT IN OUTPLYT.

The Portland cement manufac turer, in Japan will continus out- put curtailment for the months of September, October, and November af the rate of 53.9 per cent, accord“ ing to the decision made at the com- mittee meeting of the Japan Port land Cement Manufacturers As- sociation held at the Oye Building Osaka recently..

#

"

Nominally this is a reduction of some 3.5 per cent from the pre- vious output curtailment rate which is to be continued until the end of this month, but, as a matter of fact, this will be about the same räte as cow, because the producers. have been allowed to increase out- put by 3.5 per cent. if they make cxports, in accordance with the previous agreement.

بیات

Some members of the committee A their meeting strongly advocat. ed that the curtailment rate here. after should be revised to a higher rate than at present in view of the fact that the stock at the end of July was still nearly 330,000 tons, and it may not decline to 250,000 tons, equivalens to 1,328,000 barrels, as it has been expected by the Association.

Finally, however, even those who asserted the necessity of increased cutpat curtailment, were silenced and obliged to follow the majority, whose opinion was that the rate should be somewhat relieved from the viewpoint that the cost of manu facturing cannot be raised further, and also in view of the fact that T.260 Transhipment cargo includes all the adoption of higher reduction cargo which, though transferred to will evoke a storm of adverse com- one ship from another, remains under the shipowner's control dur-ment by the public. ing the whole of the time the cargo is in the Colony, whether on a through bill of lading or otherwise. The number of packages tranship- ped only, is stated in the return, no details of quantities and values being available.

The transhipment return also in- eludes a number of items of general import cargoes which, although con- signed to firms in Hong Kong Total Cin

Monthly Returns In Future. Mr. W. Schofield, Assistant Superintendent of imports and, Ex- ports, states that although the re- turns for the quarter under review are grouped together, it is hoped to publish the returns monthly in future. The first issue will deal with the figures for the month of July.

The collection of trade statistics was abolished in June, 1925, hát was resumed on April 1, 1930.

Under the former system. fresh foodstuffs were exempt but must now be declared in the same way as other items el merchandise. Although the figures for fresh food- stuffs are by no means complete it. is anticipated that the greater pro-1 -portion of this trade will be ia- cluded in fature returnż.

Figures Under stated.

As a general rule, the figures given may be understood to be under rather than over stated, many importers and exporters having failed to declare their imports and exports accurately and completely.

HEROIC FIGHT WITH DEADLY: FUMES.

Heroic workmen on a Newcastle' quayside dashed to the rescue of their comrades lying gassed in a ship's hold at Newcastle-on-Tyne recently, and brought them to the deck in the nick of time. Ten men were gassed, one of them seriously. The cause of the mishap is not definitely known. Dockhands attri bute it to fumes caused by the fermentation of a fruit cargo, which was loaded at Ghent few days pre viously. The vessel, named-Bilton," arrived in the Tync, but the work of unloading the cargo was delayed be cause of Bank Holiday.
