SOME."HOME" COMMENT.

Those interested in racing will be pleased to tear, that the three Shanghai race clubs are taking steps to prevent what is known na "in and "out" racing. Prefacing the

draft programme for the Autumn meeting of the Shanghai Häcs Club are two interesting notides, one of which relates to the doping" of ponies, and the other to" in and out" racing. The notices, which, cannot fail to be of particular interest to local owners, jockeys, and punters, read as follows m

not been ridder to win, and also jocker co-operation to report at any time when they think their mounts are not in a condition to win or even to make a showing.

The following editorial, which 'ap- peared in the Sunday Sportsman on July 6, is of some interest, in connection with the above:---

RIDING OUT!"

It would be idle to disguise the fact that, there was a good deal of dissatisfaction at Newmarket in coanection with the Stud Produce Stakes, run for on the second day and won by Wendybrae. Reference is made to the fact that in the opinion of a large section of the spectators: Lady Maderty could have been second to Windybrae, instead of finishing, as she actually did, in fourth place. Needless to remark, the expressions of annoy ance came from the people who had backed Lady Maderty for a place oa the totalisator. They regarded themselves as having been cheated out of the money which was legiti- is no rule to compel a jockey to do enough to get his horse into

"In and Out" Running,

The following notice is issued to onmers and jockeys of the Shang- hai Race Club, Chinese Jockey Club of Shanghai, and the International Recreation Club :-

The Stewards of the above three Race Clubs regret that they find it necessary to issue this notice with a view to prevent "in and outi running of race ponies on the local race-courses; that is, it is possible that ponies are run on one course with no intention of winning, and raa the following day on another course or a week later on the original course to win.

Times, however, have changed. The totalisator has been intro- duced by the Jockey Club, who, nowaways, not only take official cognisance of betting but are active- ly associated with that side of the sport. When the totalisator was introduced one of the attractions held out to the public was that they would be able to bet for places only, an advantage not accorded to them by the men of the ring.

But if the old system of easing horses out of places is to continue without let or hindrance, what be- comes of the advantage?

"It's a rotten game, isn't it?” said Sir Ernest.

Wallace: Yes; I've not shown any profit by it.

The Recorder said he would try An experiment. The man had spent most of his time in gaol until two years ago, when he came under the good influence of a woman and went straight. Getting into reduc ed circumstances, however, he re- verted to his old life.

When a man tried to make good for two years he himself (the Re-. corder) would do what he could for him. That would be his first and last chance. He would be bound over for two years,
