The phenomenal slump in silver exchange is the principal factor in the rising cost of living in China, Dr. Ho declares.

the general tendency ia the $124 fluctuation of both raw ma- 88.15 terials and manufactured goods has been somewhat similar.

A little more than two years ago, two Chinese dollars would buy one American dollar. To-day, almost four Chinese dollars are required för the same purpose. Ås most countries are on a gold basis, all importa are affected adversely for China,

Dr. Ho points out, however, that China is compelled to im- port a large quantity of rice and wheat flour, and other food pro- ducts. This, therefore, enters largely into the rising living costs.
