Miss Marjorie Mott, daughter of Mrs. Ernest Julian Mott of San Francisco, California, became the bride of Mr. David Clyde Berger, American Consul at Swatow, on Saturday afternoon.

The wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Kirby' at 2, May Road, the Rev. Mr. Johnston of the Union Church officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Berger left on Sunday for Swatow where they will reside. Mrs. Mott is remaining a few days as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby before visiting Manila.

BRITAIN'S RIVALS.

CROWTH OF FOREIGN FLEETS.

The

Dow edition (1930-31) of Lloyd's Register, published last month, is a book about 33,000 ships.

During the past twelve months there has been an increase in the world's shipping of 1,533,332 tona, as compared with an expansion of 1,119,653 tons a year earlier.. The bulk of this is represented by 1,468,235 tons of new motor ship- ping. Nations, showing the largest increases are:-Norway (433,766 tons), Great Britain (272,113 tons), France (162,248, tins) The United States in the only important country to show a decrease (438,214 tons), due mainly to the scrapping of laid- up tonnage built during the War.

During the 10 years that bave clapsed since the war began in 1914, steam and motor tonnage has increased by over 224 million tons. There is no doubt that this has much to do with the present ship- ping slump.

Britain's Position. Compared with other countries, Britain's position as a shipowning nation has declined. In 1888 aho. owned 54 per cent, of the world's steam. and motor tonnage; by 1914 this figure was reduced to 41.8, and to-day it is just below 30 per cent.
