PIRATES FIGHT WITH

GUNBOAT.

JUNKS HELD UP NEAR SWATOW.

Pirates are still active between Bias Bay and Swatow, according to a Chinese report from Swatow Three cargo junks were held up. quite recently. The following are the details:-

On Monday eighteen cargo junks left Swatow and sailed together. under the escort of a gunboat pro- vided by the local merchants. Three of the junks, which were sail. ing far ahead of the rest of the "vessels, encountered over ten pirate, vessels, when they arrived near Wuy They were held up and forced to "moor along the shore where they were thoroughly ransack- ed.

The other vessels and the gunboat soon came up and the latter fired at the pirate vessels which return- ed the fre. Another gunboat hap- pened to pass by and participated in the fighting, and eventually the garrison troops at Wayu arrived on the scene.

The fighting lasted the whole afternoon,

eventually the but pirates were, owing to shortage of ammunition, forced to retreat.
