HOW, THE "PETROL TAX WILL WORK.

The following is a report by the Inspector-General of Police on Hong Kong existing taxation of motor vehicles in Hong Kong as compared with taxation in force in neighbouring and other countries:- :

Since the inception of motor taxı- tion in Hong Kong the rates of taxation have been based on the weight of the vehicle.

A Committee was formed in 1999

to consider the basis on which the tax on motor vehicles should be assessed. The Committee recom- mended a tax on horsepower. This is, however, not considered to be a satisfactory form of motor taxation, and it has since been decided that the best method would be to place a tax on petrol, leaving the annual on the registration fees based weight of the vehicle, or in the case of public vehicles at a nominal figure with a seating tax.
