EXPRESSIVE DEAF AND DUMB GESTURES.

Mr. Daniel Jones, the Professor of Phoneties at University College, London, recently threw out in a lecture a fascinating new idea. It is that the natural sign language usey by the deaf and dumb might become the basis of an inter national language for the same pur- pose as the artificial international languages at present employed."

This idea, which at first sight sounds rather fantastic. is seriously put forward by Professor Daniel Jones, who is, of course, a pro- minent authority on speech and language. A Manchester Guardian representative asked him to explain his proposals, and he did so an the following line. There are, it appears, two sorts of signs used by the deaf and dumb, natural signs which are obvious to anyone, and arbitary signs which are not so easy Romance, tongues. 7.07
