SAIGON RICE.

SUDDEN RISE: NO SELLERS.

We have received the following report, dated June 28, from the Société ladochinoise de Commerce, Salxon:-

The rice market reached bottom on Thursday with the price of $7.93 per picul instext of 37.53 on the opening of the market last week. There were at once buyers, and five thousand tons have been bought, The market immediately rose to close frm at 97.40 en Friday and #T.CC to-day with no sellers.

There have been some enquiries from Java, and it seemed that we were very near doing fair business, but Anally only a few hundred tons have been closed, demands being eut.

the sudden rise.

"It is also rungured that there are sous offers from China, but up to now no confirmation has arrived..

From France, demand has been very pour and only, small business has been possibly at the lowest pritr quoted.

On the whole cur market has not been very active, and its sudden rise comes, in our opinion, from the fact that stocks of paddy in" Chalon, having been constituted at a rather high price, detentors are endeavouring to keep the market

up.

The market closed firm with very few sellers at the following prices: No. 1 Long 25 per cent and No. 1. Round 25 per cent. --1 franes per 100Ks. 8.19 guilders per Java pikol 0.43 yen per picul; 1/- per cut.

LUXURY TRAPPINGS OF BARBARIC CHIEF.

FOUND IN TOMB...

Gold treasures from a tomb more than 1.300 years old are a dazzling feature of the Art in the Dark Ages" exhibition at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in Savile Row, W.

This extraordinarily lavish use of gold by a Serce barbaric tribe is one of the surprises of the exhibi tion.

Under the name of Langobardi, the Lombards, after long tribal wanderings, reached Hungary, crossed the Danube, and id 486 began the conquest of Italy.

Thus, was Lombardy founded. and the treasures now shown frein the grave of a Lombard chieftain are among the most interesting ever seen in London.

The luxury with which this semi- savage chieftain made his conquests is almost incredible. He used a spur of solid gold weighing more than 130z. troy, highly decorative iran gold-mounted daggers," an spear-head with a band of red cluisoqué enamel on a gold base above the mouth, and wore a gold almost collar of six curved and oblong plates embossed with scenes and figures.

Not content to decorate only bir- self with precious gold, he had, a pair of gold horie-trappings, "with gold rivets.

In this amazing grave was found also the gold mount of a horse- collar with two grotesque wolf-like heads to all the end panels, and a sword and helmet of iron, both mounted in gold.

Precious Manuscripts.

Experts believe that the tomb of Attila, King of the Euns, when YEARS found, may reveal even more BS-

tounding treasures.

A man who joined the Royal Navy no less than 8 years ago as an A.B. and left it 40 years later as à commissioned officer recently celebrated bis 96th birthday.

He is Mr. James John Mills, of Beatrice Avenue, Plymouth, and he recalls vividly the days when sailors received dd. a day and were fed on salt pork and biscuits.

Mr. Milis provides a living link with Nelson, for his first ship was the San Joseph, 120 guns, which Steeplejack Thomas Brewis, Tyne was captured by Nelson from the Street. rescue.

Fleming called to a sixteen-year- old boy, Nichol Whitehend, to bring him a life-belt, and Whitehead, although he had never before been on a ladder, exhibited remarkable coolness and obeyed Fleming's in structions. While Fleming held the unconscious man Whitehead fastened the belt round his body, and the two then lowered him to the ground. where he was treated by the works ambulance and soon recovered.

Fleming says that Whitehead showed no nervousness, though un-. accustomed to heights." He played a far bigger part in saving Brewis' life than I did," he said. Brewia was working on the lee side of the a hole from chimney, just below which gas escapes.

A German chemist, Dr. Albertus, of Munich, has devoted years to the study of methods for restoring valuable silks that may have been wrapped round the remains of some eminent personage for perhaps 1,000 years.
