Duty-free World Fort,

In an interview with local Press- men this morning, Mr. Tang said that his main mission to Canton at this time is to confer with General Chen Ming Shu and others about his plans for the development of Tong Ka Wan into a duty-free world port rivalling Hong Kong. Huge sums of money have to be appro priated for the purpose. Most prob ably these funds will have to be

obtained from the Provincial Trea

In conclusion, Mr. Tang said that he expects to stay in Canton for four or five days' only.

Mr and Mrs. Tang were the guests of honour at a banquet givea by General Chen Ming Shu at the Tungshan Tooisi Club last night.

Port Painted In Roseate Hues.

The ardent supporters of the Tong Ka Wan development scheme have again painted the prospective port in roseate hues. In a statement issued for publication to-day they said that a better world port in South China could not be found. The Lingting Sca leading up to

Tong Ka Wan from the Pacific is more than 100 feet in depth, thus permitting the passage of ocean- going liners with a tonnage of 20.000 or even 30,000. Moreover, "the harbour is big enough to maar over 30 ships without the slightest difficulty.

Saigon Rice Market.

The 1930 exportable surplus has, been estimated to be about 1,200,000 tons. This year owing to a crop failure in Tonkin a certain amount of the surplus will be required for that part of Indo-China. Tonkin has prohibited the export of rice in all its forms and has already pur chased some 8,000 tons of Saigon Rice.

At the moment, the market is very dead as the price of Saigon Rice is considerably above that of Rangoon and Siam. Another fac- tor is that, lured by hopes of higher, prices later in the year, the farm- ers and middlemen are holding up their stocks of paddy in the in- terior, and not sending them down to the mills.

Tong Ka Wan is so centrally located that communication and transportation may be made with any part of the interior of Kwangtung with the greatest ease. Thus, it requires only four hours to reach there from Canton by boat, which is about two hours less compared with the journey from Canton to Hong Kong Moreover, shipa plying on the West River will find it to their advantage to stop at Tong Ka Wan than at Hong Kong, as this will mean saving of more than 30 miles of travel. In all probability, according to the promotors, of the scheme, ocean-going liners will also call at Tong Ka Wan because of its central position.

this manner cannot be kept for any length of time. Chemical fertiliser, it is further alleged, draws all the richness out of the soil, and has the effect of quickly making fertile soil barren.

It was suggested in the letter that farmers generally should revert to the use of old-style Chinese methods of fertilising the soil-a inethod which was described in the circular as more dependable and less costly in the long run.
