FATAL ACCIDENT İN SINGAPORE.

AMERICAN KILLED WHEN CAR OVERTURNS.

A motoring tragedy resulting in the death of 'ho. American resident of Singapore occurred at Johore Bahru last week.

The deceased was Mr. J. J. Con- manager of the Singapore way, office of the American Express Com- pany who died at the General Hos pital, Johorë, two hours after the nccident.

Mr. Conway was in his car coming into Singapore and had reached the entrance to the Johore Causeway. when his front inside,wheel hit the cornerstone near the Johore Cus- toms Office. The car swerved and turned over, pinning Mr. Conway underneath. The Malay driver of the car was thrown out but escaped serious injury. Mr. Conway was pulled out and rushed to the Johore hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His injuries included a fractice of the skull, legs-and-ribs.

Mr. Conway was unmarried and came from Rhode Island. He was only 37 years of age,

COLONY'S RATEABLE VALUE.

76.87 PER CENT. INCREASE IN EIGHT YEARS.

In his report on the assessment of the Colony for 1030-31, the Colonial Treasurer states:-.

By order of His Excellency the Governor in Council a new raluation of the Whole Colony has been made, and the rateable value has thereby been increased from $31,617,568 to 333,050,602 an addition of $1,452.033 or 4.50 per cent.
